Kind of like here on DPC? LOL

I'm bi-coastal. Live in LA most of the time but have a house in Connecticut and go to New York City all the time. I wear my 10D around my neck with a huge lens, shop on Canal Street (grungy area - fun to buy knock-off items and some electronics). I've never had any problem - it is safer than many US cities, including Los Angeles. I love to take pictures in Central Park, all over the city the street stuff is great, Little Italy is fun (and right next to Canal for eating lunch or dinner (and completely safe due to the mafia presence). Times Square (where you will be staying) offers theatre and colorful city shots, and the brownstones and lovely buildings are great for photos. I love to shop in SoHo, I go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art nearly every visit and the village is fun for nightlife. It's kind of hard not to have a great time in NYC. There are endless photo opportunities and a never-ending supply of things to do. You'll want to see Fifth Ave., of course, visit Rock Center, and take the tour to the Statue of Liberty, if you have time. It is not a city to be intimidated by, IMO. It's logically layed out and easy to get around. Have fun!

Thanks to everyone, esp. Mag, for upholding the reputation of NYC. Some of you people are crazy, worrying about muggings so much. Guess what, you are the people who will get mugged; if you act like a victim you will be a victim. Be confident, don't worry, use your brain when entering bad areas/situations, and you'll be fine. You're far more likely to get hurt badly in a fight if you go into any bar in any small country town in the country than you are to get hurt or mugged while beign a tourist in NY. I find it funny that people are comparing NY to other cities and saying that it isn't big. Perhaps you are forgetting about all the boroughs? Also, it is a very safe city as far as densely populated areas go, and it is the most well organized and prosperous. The only other city I would even compare it to in any way is Tokyo, which is much denser and still orderly. Boston, Philadelphia, LA, San Francisco, etc. are not cities. Cities have public transportation that runs 24 hours. Cities never sleep. NYC is a city, the city. That city in Brazil looks very impressive, but I'm sure it is one of those places where you are likely to be mugged and you just have to accept it, it's how the economy there works.

You won't be dissappointed on your trip. It is a safe and one of a kind place. It has stuff to interest everybody. Oh, and B+H is a very fine store. They won't be able to rip you off unless you're a real idiot, in fact you can often barder with them, especially on their large supply of used and returned merchandise.

Have a great visit. Say high to the city for me. I'm not trying to downgrade other cities, I just felt I had to come the The City's rescue in this thread. It is a world apart from any other destination you will go to yet it is the single most important and visited place in the entire world (besides Madagascar of course).
