Just the one

Don't you think it would be more appropriate to show outtakes after the voting period has ended?
01/25/2006 02:40:26 AM · #4
Why?

I didn't enter so it will make little difference to me

Say you posted a shot in the challenge. You're new here. You see a shot in the outtake thread that is similar to yours but in your opinion way better than the shot you took. Would you be discouraged?

i tend to agree with TC on this one... then again, just my opinion :)

If that same person went to the voting page he would also be discouraged.
This is a place to learn, isn't it?

Will that same person vote fairly if he saw better shots in the challenge? That is maybe one of the true DPC dilemmas and fair voting is what this site is built on.

I think we should agree to disagree on this one :)

Common courtesy and site etiquette are not on your side on this one. You should wait till after the challenge voting to post outtakes. If on the other hand you are simply fishing for comments you can simply post a forum thread for new pictures...

I would say "Why?" again, but I'm too afraid of Mr. Tee's pity!

I defer to your 5 entries into challenges and your 94 visits to the forums over the last nearly 2 years. I did not realize that you had such insight to how this community works. Post away...

I'm not attempting to insult. I'm simply trying to convey that there is an established sense of courtesy and ettiquette here which frowns upon posting outtakes during a currently running challenge. You said that my comment was simple rubbish...

That was a personal attack, not an attempt. How you can talk about common courtesy and then post as you have is beyond me.

Actually, no -- at least not in the time I've been here. The challenges and the forums have always been considered separate entities -- with the single exception of not destroying anonymity, that is the only site etiquette.

There are some that disagree with posting outtakes, there are some that disagree with any discussion of the current challenges -- but it is encouraged by the site, that is after all what the 'Current Challenge' forum is for.

Besides, restricting what sort of photos can be posted for review is not in the sites best interest. There is a challenge on the color blue right now, should we forbid any images exhibiting prominent blue elements? How about romantic images -- there's a challenge for that as well. Actually, there is a free study going on this month -- maybe we should not post any photos at all until it's over.

Start restricting what photos can be presented for review (with the exception of those restricted by the TOS) and the greatest benefit of the site vanishes.

IMO -- of course. ;)
