Does anyone have any advice on taking a shot of just eyes (and the top of a head)? I want to do anything I can to bring out their beauty and detail.

OK, just to make sure I'm understanding you correctly... you want to get a shot (w/ much detail) of just the eyes?

This will definitely be a macro shot. But the most important thing with eye shots is that you have a single light source (or at least one light source that will show up as catch lights).
But, what I need to know is how close to the eyes, you want to be.

Imagine a kid peeking over a bucket. That's what I want... I have no macro lens, but I do have a full studio and I will use a softbox to get a nice square catch...
I seem to remember something about making sure the pupils are big or something... hmmm |

use like 50-85 mm...widest aperture you can (1.8 works well) -- get close, about 3 feet, focus on the eye, and shoot!

I do see you have a good zoom lens and as you stated you have a softbox for a nice square zoom.
Shoot with the softbox at no further that 30 degrees from camera center Porbably want to use your longer zoom at about 100-150 mm.
You'll want to get the pupils as dialated as possible.. but if you aren't using a lot of constant light this should not be a problem. But, if you want to keep the pupils as wide as possible.. have your subject keep his/her eyes closed shut for about 30 seconds prior to exposure. Have them open thier eyes 1-2 seconds before you are ready to capture.
I'd imagine you'd want a bit of DoF, so f/8 would be a good starting point.

| A model with LONG eyelashes. They help to accent the eyes. You might also want to get some help from a "professional" make-up person to get the eyeshadow, lining, etc. just right. There are a lot of women who sell make-up, that are trained in its proper application, etc. If your wife/significant other goes to those parties, she could get you the name of someone that might help in with that. |

If you use autofocus, my trick for super-sharp eyes is to use the center focus point. Put it over the inside corner of the eye so that you see where the lids diverge through that center focal point; this provides good strong contrasting lines for your camera to use to set the accurate focal plane. Press the shutter half way to lock focus, and then recompose the shot.
