Gut feel, with emphasis on creativity and technical merit; photos that make me go oooh aaaah - wish I could do that (such as some really awesome night shots) get a 6 or better; photos that elicit a non-committal response get a 5; photos with technical flaws 4 and lower.

I like your breakdown. I think it would be nice if everyone at least considered each of your topics when voting. When I look at some scores here I get the feeling that some people just close their eyes and click.

Keep shootin' and have fun!

If a photo meets the challenge well enough and has no particular thing I can critique ('bad focus,' 'weird composition,' 'please don't shoot the insides of nostrils in extreme closeup,' 'lighting very harsh,' 'if you blurred the background more it wouldn't be so muddy') -- in other words, if it fits but it's boring and doesn't pop for any reason, I give it a 5.

5 is where photos start for me. If it's also an interesting image, or catches my attention, that might push it to 7 or so. If at first glance it grabs me by the hindbrain and rivets my attention, that's a 9 or 10 (as long as it also fits the topic! If it rivets me but I can't shoehorn it into the topic, it gets a pity 4 and a comment).

You can also go under 5, from me. The easiest way is not to fit the challenge (or to only fit it after lengthy 'nudge nudge, look how clever I am!' explanation). Another way is to have blatant technical flaws (which usually also gets a comment, or at least ought to if I'm not too busy).

However, I can't break it down to 'it gets five points for topic, one point for title ...' etc, because it's more organic than that. If it fits the topic ok, has no flaws, and is a marginally interesting image, usually it'll get a 6 from me.

Which probably explains why my 'average vote given' is 6.6942 at the moment. :-> I don't even see that average as a problem. I give 1-4 votes. I give 9s and 10s. Both are sparing, for me. And most challenges (the recent ones are an exception), my most common vote - the 'mode' if you're into stats - from me on the bulk of the pictures is usually a 7.

You give a photo a 5 only mainly because it meets the challenge?

If the shot is in focus, not over or under-exposed, composed reasonably well, reasonably on topic and at least sort of interesting I get a 5. If it is lacking one or more of these elements I mark it down a bit, depending on how much is lacking. If it has all these criteia and more of it somehow, i.e. very creative subject, good title, great capture, wow effect it goes up depending on how much 'more' it has.
There are a few shots which are obviously and intentionally blurred or over or under-done ect. and those I mark based on how effective their creative attemp was.

I like how you have a system. Can't say I do. Pretty much go on gut. A combination of the things you mentioned, but hazy on the exact points given. Then there's the factor of how I'm feeling that day. ha.

Sometimes I go back to up/down scores on certain photos depending on how they match up to its fellow 5's or 6's or whatever.

a 'wow' photo that doesn't quite meet the challenge vs. a 'ugh' photo that does: they both are likely to get similar scores. not quite fair, but can't help it.

Title gets a point?! I don't consider title at all cause that really doesn't prove it's a good photo. I basically just look at it overall (appeal, technical, creativity, on topic). If it meets the challenge and is technically good the lowest it can get is a 5. I think the thing I value most in voting is all the technical aspects of it (sharpness, composition, pixelation, colors, lighting, etc.)

Certianly all essential measures of evaluation...... but remember on our voting scale of 1-10 - 5.5 is a mathematical average photo.....

Some titles add essence to the photo, others make you think. Others just suck. I learn from my mistakes, I had a shot, and I named it "The Chair" or something like that, the point is, I probably would have placed higher had I had a more appealing title.

Also, I figured that as long as you mentioned it, I might as well comment on this as well, and im not speaking directly to you. Before I start, all of this is imho. Technical aspects are good and all, but isn't photography mainly about the actual feeling or emotion captured in a picture? sure techinical aspects play a big role, but I would never give say 5 points off just for a technical problem.

true david, but look at all the top placing photos. all of them are techanically great.
07/16/2003 03:31:10 PM · #14
I'll go backwards:

9s & 10s are for photos that move me emotionally or make me go wow, or which help me learn something about myself or the world. A 10 will usually have few technical flaws (ALL photos have flaws, except for those shot by Kiwiness and JJbeguin!)

8s are for really fine shots that don't quite do what 9s and 10s do.

7s are for shots that are good, but perhaps do not move me, or would possibly move me if they were technically better*.

5s and 6s are for good shots, but shots in which I found not a lot of creativity, or perhaps in which I did not perceive high technical merit.

3s and 4s are for shots that just don't do it for me, or that do not meet the challenge that I can see.

You've almost got to TRY to get a 1 or a 2! I don't give many of these at all.

There is a lot of sliding around, too. For example, if a shot isn't very technically sound, but moves me greatly, I'll score it higher. Or if a shot is very creative, I'll score it higher. Yeah, it's a gut thing.

* Techical merit, to me, is a photo that is true to the rules it sets for itself. So if it is out of focus, there should be a reason for it to be so, If so called *rules* were broken, there is a clear reason for it.

Many would say that technicality is too much of a factor on this website, its also the reason I probably wont be renewing my membership, people give a shot to high of a score just because its "entertaining" or "technically perfect"

Not scientifically.

I think my score is directly related to how long I spend looking at the image. I'll obviously spend more time staring at an image that 'wows' me. And images that 'wow' me are inherently creative, technically well executed, and meet the challenge, and thus get the higher scores.
07/17/2003 02:46:51 PM · #18
I start in the middle (at 5) and add or deduct points on technical, how well it fits the challenge, beauty/aesthetic (would I want this on a wall poster?), interest (photojournalistic or something to learn). No matter how lovely the image, it must be good technically or it will lose major points.
