Newbie here with a kinda non-important but interesting question!

I just entered my first submission... and right now it's at a 5.0 and to tell you the sad truth, am pretty proud. HAHA I know it's not a good score, but oh well. This leads to my question!

What were your guys and gals final score from your first submission?

5 is pretty good for a first-timer. My first challenge received a final score of 5.049. If you get a 5 here, you're doing well - your photo is average, middle of the road for a challenge. Above 5 - very well. 5.5 or above - really really well, and 6 or higher - extremely well. I'm struggling to reach a 5.5 average.

6.27 on my first entry, and downhill ever since. actually only beat that once in ten entries. maybe next week...

My first entry was a 5,097.

I think if you get a 5 it´s a very good average for the first entry. But the most important is that you are proud of your work. So, are you proud of it?

Do you have any relation with Spain?

My first score, which just seems to have dropped off the bottom of my profile page(?), was only around a 3, but I only found out about the site about four hours before the submission deadline. My next one broke 4, and I think I took about four or five tries to get a five. But I also don't necessarily submit the photo I think will get the "best" score for a variety of reasons ....

my first score isn't in yet, but from what I've seen of the challenges so far, 5 is good. don't think I've seen many people with averages topping an 8.

Only about 5-10% of the WINNING PHOTOS top 8.

5 is pretty solid. Keep in mind, a 7 is a winner.
My first score (last week) was a smidge under 6, so I was happy, but it was just luck that the photo I had been trying to get worked out, and then I found the 'speed' challenge. Luck of the draw.

If you ask me a average of 5=above average on this site. I look at it at a 5 being average, what just about anyone with a camera can do, with small "mistakes," etc. But, that is not the way of this site. I am thinking if you get a 4.5, you are hitting an average mark. I have had a few that are decent technically (sometimes "artsy"), but people just don't like for some reason. Take Taken By Surprise for example. My first submission at 4.921. Just "sick" to some people.

dacrazyrn that roadkill is great. Nothing sick about death. The fact that you caught it with a bare tree (or dead tree) just makes it. Maybe you should have photographed a fluffy kitten.

Another message for the new person: Don't worry too much about that score. There is no such thing as a professional critic. If there was a greatest photo in history, it might come in anywhere from 1st to 80th on here.

It's easier than that General: there are only 11 shots that score 8 or above.

11 out of 117 challenges is close enough to 10% for me (for a "guesstimate").

The last challenge winner scored an even 7.000.

4.953
The whole 5 average theory remains accurate!

Just from my first submission I got comments that blew me away...
I'm not used to such helpful critiques!

Hey, your roadkill was more tasteful than my roadkill. :-> Which still got a 4.438, and the largest number of comments of ANY of my submissions so far.

my first was 4.378 my best 5.644 (and it was a picture of shots i did in the darkroom)

For the first timer,
An easy way to tell how you did in an individual challenge is to average the highest and lowest score, and then compare your score to the average. This will keep you on top of what/how you do each time.

my first was 5.305 and my best 5.691

My first score was 5.5, which is just above my overall 5.4 average. I finally broke the 6 barrier with a few of shots. Still waiting on the one that breaks 7.

My first score was 6.484 but I got lucky, because the challenge was photojournalism which is what I do best (my winner was in Magazine cover) my lowest score on this site was 4.024 my highest ever score was 7.454 the lowest came right after the highest... hehehe... 5 is a very solid first score!
