I know like myself some of you go away from your computer for weeks at a time. Ex vacation, buisness,to see a friend, family emergencies. My point being many pictures are taken that cannot be considered for challenges because of time restaints. What I an proposing is monthly or bimonthly have a challenge for best of last month or last two monthes. This will also give a better chance to the people who do not have many oppertunities to go out and about freely. Just a thought. If this has already been considered my bad!!!

Me too. They could do this with the free studies, even if quarterly, if they simply allowed your entry to come from anytime in the quarter, not just when it's announced. But I'd love to see this happen monthly.

It's been proposed numerous times. Many are in favor, but there's a strong "conservative faction" in DPC that feels the themed challenges are what set us apart from other sites and that if we have regular free studies we'll be "just another photo site". I don't know where the powers-that-be stand on this currently.

As usual, Row_Bear has summed it up pretty well. In addition, we considered quarterly free studies, but there are compelling reasons why we can't run them on a predictable schedule, so we settled on running them randomly. I do think that, as Bear posted, there's a concern that if the free studies were run back-to-back, they would somehow "take away" from the focus of the site. That argument may have been valid when the site was much smaller, but I'm not so sure it still has validity today.

Disclaimer: this is all my personal view and opinion.

I prefer themed challenges to free studies.

As long as we have BOTH, I'm happy, but I'd hate to miss out on all the wonderful "restrictions" that I believe make us think and learn so much more.

As Robert said - those themed challenges are what sets DPC apart from the countless other sites.

it does not have to be a free study ,it could be very spicific in form with no quetion on meeting chalenge eather you do or dont!! remove the gray area type challenge

I agree with Beetle in one thing: I love the themed challenges. They add an interest and provoque people going out for pictures. Before I began in DPC I only made pics on trips or holidays and now I leave home with my camera many more times.

But in the other hand, I travel quite frequently, and I feel in this trips more free to make photos: new places, new people, new ideas...
I think it should be great to have a "Best of the last three (or four) months".

Best of the last 2-3 months is called Portfolio.

Putting it up for voting is called 'Individual photograph discussion' in the forums.

And what is the problem with having a Challenge also? OK, you can use Portfolio or Individual... but if you can also enter in a Challenge would be better. JMO.

The themed challanges have helped me develope a creative eye, as I am better able to see a photo in things I never would have considered before!
I would not mind a few more free studies, but I love the themes. I just wish more people would actually follow the subjects. Maybe with a few more free studies, people could enter their beautiful shots in there, instead of using titles to force them to fit into the themed challenges.

I think often when someone suggests something new, others believe it will take something old away. I don't think there's any suggestion to displace a themed challenge. Any more than Best of 2005 does.

Perhaps in lieu of an annual "Best of", I would prefer to have "Best of Month". That's just 12 challenges a year, but it gives people like me a chance to show and get a large number of critiques on work that otherwise does not fit a challenge. (There are many sites for critiquing, but I don't know of any that let you really get a large number of critiques and more importantly anonymous ratings--for example, on Photosig, you are lucky to get 3, and it's not anonymous. On PhotoPoints, it's anonymous for 24 hours, but it's mostly "good job" critiques anyway. Etc. The DPC crowd is the best!)

Note also, when you post for critique in the forum, you can get a handful of very good critiques, but the anonymous ratings are missing, and I do think that measure of "mass appeal" is also good information for the photographer.

Agreeing with this one :) - It would (hopefully) stop people treating all the challenges as a free study.

IMO,I like the best of quarter idea, it would give us a chance to post one of our favorite shots, but did not have a challenge to put it in.

This has been discussed an awful lot in the past. The present mix is not what I advocated for but it does seem to satisify the needs of most dpc users. I am happy to let it go on as it has, with maybe a few more 48 hr speed challenges thrown in here and there.

my point is for the people who have a chance to be in here all the time and go out and take pictures when they want this is just another challenge..........But for the people who dont have that freedom this might be there only chance to put something in here that they realy care about and were able to spend some time working on. In my area exp. this time of year people who work full time do not even get out of work till it is dark out. Realy limits when you can go out and work at taking pictures for weekly challenges. It seems that it would work what it is called is not realy important.

Free studies usually confuse me in what to enter and the ones I do enter are usually outtakes from a challenge in that month, don't get me wrong I like them but probably not every month.

Just to confirm ...I never said it should be a free study and dont want it to be a free study. I like having a theam it helps and it gives a basline for comments

As a fairly new user of this site, I have to say that it was the challenges that made the decision for me to go ahead and join up for the year. I love free studies, don't get me wrong... but all other photography sites (or at least the ones I know of) are essentially constant free studies. The challenges really make me put a lot of thought into shots. It keeps me thinking creatively. (now I just need to actually take them and get them edited and submitted before deadlines) I honestly put less effort in something I'm shooting for a free study, because it doesn't have to have a specific theme. I know that sounds terrible, but I am just being honest.
I'm sure this has probably been suggested previously, but my thought is that it would be neat to have a free study going all the time: Have it end and a new one begin say.. every 2 weeks, and the images can be taken any time within the 2 week period. Or have one that runs on alternate 2-week periods. I'm not sure how much more work it would cause for the site-peoples, though. But that way, those who can't enter challenges because of time constraints can still enter free studies, and not submit quality images that score low because of the dreaded "DNMC" votes.

Just my $.02 =)

For what it's worth, it seems to me if we have a monthly Free Study, in which any picture taken in the previous month could be entered, in addition to our regular menu of themed challenges, there's no need to worry about false dates and the like; EVERY image you take will be good to go in the first week of the month after you take it.

Even if this brings in a wave of people who are primarily attracted by these 12 free studies a year, surely some portion of them will become regular participants in the rest of the site's activities, and it's all good?

Just food for thought.
