"lense" is an accepted variant and perhaps more widely used among those who speak the Queen's English. Opinions from the other side of the pond?

while we're at it...is it color or colour? j/k ;)

"lense" is a perfectly accpetable spelling over on the other side of the pond; it is, in fact, the original spelling according to the OED. Let's not be so USA-centric, eh?

Well, the Queen needs to go back to school.

Lense make him Tense

BAH! OK, so the "common" way is without the "e". We had a big feud at work about sand and soil lenses (which is right) and if it was proper to be a lens or lense. Both are correct according to every dictionar and encyclopedia we found in analog and digital worlds. Lens is just more commonly used.

Sorry Artyste, we're both right! Heheh.
Much Love!

this wasn't an entirely serious rant to begin with, so keep that in mind.

"lense" does bug me though. lol

Bugs the hell out of me too, truth be known, looks silly on the page. But it IS a valid and not especially uncommon spelling of the word.

Just out of curiosity, do you pronounce it "ee-ther" or "eye-ther", "to-mah-to" or "to-may-to"?

ee-ther/eye-ther = or
to-mah-to/to-may-to = mater

:-P

Bugs me too, but I wish we would adopt the metric system.

You sure you don't mean 'tents'?

Hmmm, I happen to have a copy of the SOED open in front of me, and it makes no mention of "lense" as being an acceptable spelling, alternate spelling, original spelling or archaic spelling. Admittedly it is the Shorter OED (2 vols, 6 kg / 13 lb), I don't have access to the COED. :)

Edit: I'm not from either side of the Atlantic, I'm from the arse end of the world (to quote a former Prime Minister).

Never seen a 'lense' in the UK myself.....whenever I se it spelt like that it brings on a tens, nervous headach.

No mention of lense in (UK) Chambers English Dictionary or any of my other older ones.
Have been teaching physics for far too many years, used the red marking pencil to strike out all offending e's - will continue to do so except on DPC where my screen is becoming invisible due to too much marking!

If your upset by lense/lens or colour/color then don't get in to texting on mobile phones. With the abbreviated language being used more & more by the (& I can't believe I'm about to use this expression) "younger generation" the destruction of the English written language is going to take a turn for the worst.

Its LENS in the UK

01/20/2006 07:27:34 AM · #21
Artyste is correct. Ain't no such word in English as "lense". Never has been. Only place I have ever seen that spelling is here.
01/20/2006 07:49:51 AM · #22
If in doubt, have a quick check of the Google stats:

Lense - 2.3 million refs
Lens - 54.9 million refs

Lense (UK sites) - 216k refs
Lens (UK sites) - 3.1 million refs

It seems that the majority think that it should be "lens" on both sides of the pond :o)

What about Tense? Shouldn't that be Tens? Does that make sens?
No need to be on the defens, it isn't a offens to pretens a lense is a lens?
;)

Americans may be fat and pushy; but people that speak the "queen's english" are the most horrible abomination on earth when it comes to pronouncing words; they have total disregard for correct pronunciation; ie. Jaguar. its two syllables; not three.
