Could someone help clarify the fantasy challenge, or post a few examples.

Well, it is my own summarization that we have to portray something in fantasy. Which has a wide array of meanings, once again. From sexual (hopefully not a lot of those :) ) to Mystical, angelic, or whatever is considered fantasy to you. My problem is not subject matter, but keeping it within the boundries of the editing rules. I foresee a lot of DQ's coming up in this challenge, but I am hoping to pull my own off without one. LOL...

yeah, im with justin, does anyone have any ideas as to how this is supposed to be interpreted?
01/16/2006 11:43:59 AM · #4
I am afraid you will get many different interpretations of the challenge. I think you should to by YOUR interpretation of the challenge and be open minded when voting because it is such an open theme. Just my 2 cents.

With you June ... it is not really something like the earlier "fantasty world" challenge, but taking your own fantasy ... I wasn't going to enter ... but now I got an idea ...

I have a great idea but not sure I can shoot it before the deadline.

"Turn a fantasy into a reality," guess everyone could have thier own personal fantasies. This should be an interesting one.

I am going to google common fantasies, being that most of mine are pretty " artisticly twisted" :) and I tend to get hammered for portraying them.

This are those challenges that flip open the floodgates of creativity. Need to stay centered because the fantasy rush is indeed blinding. make sure you eat and sleep well. lol

hmm no its not... this challenge is to concerning a personal fantasy.

Having Sex with a Top Model is a fantasy
Being NEO in the Matrix is a Fantasy
Being an Ultimate fighter in the UFC is a fantasy...

Bubbles and wierd colours are not fantasy, they are fantasy worlds, enviroments...

i'm so not entering this challenge, serious lack of guides will again screw with everyone's entry because its too subjective.

Use your photographics skills to turn a fantasy into a reality.

Where in there does it say the challenge has to do with people? I can't fantasize about the world around me? If I am looking at my computer desk and imagine it turning into a giant mushroom with utters that dispense golden beer - is that not a fantasy?

The Matrix is just as much a fantasy as NEO is.

Megatherian, I totally agree with you.

...turn a fantasy into a reality.

check the dictionary, its very straight forward. Do you daydream about your desk turning into something else? or do you dream about winning the lottery, and driving a Ferrari 430 on the highway? Do you daydeamn about your desk turning into something else or saving a kid from being it by a car by jumping in the air and saving him from the crash?...

its not a fantastic world with Orcs and Dragons, its a Fantasy... something that is possible, but mostly only in your head...

Why would DPC run the same challenge twice in a 6months period? There are plenty of subjects to run around... this is different.

the 1st thing that came to my mind is mythology and unicorns and such, but that is not to say that a personal fanticy would be DNMC, i think those would be the harder shots to compose and get the feeling accross honestly... but thats key getting the emotion of it being a fanticy not just some guy fighting (like the ufc example) its all in the way it will be presented.

If I get the chance this week, I'm gonna photograph my own fantasy I've had since I was a kid. (absolutely no sex involved ;))

if I only had the materials to make this work..

Merriam-Webster definitions:

Main Entry: 1fan·ta·sy
Pronunciation: 'fan-t&-sE, -zE
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural -sies
Etymology: Middle English fantasie -- more at FANCY
1 obsolete : HALLUCINATION
2 : FANCY; especially : the free play of creative imagination
3 : a creation of the imaginative faculty whether expressed or merely conceived: as a : a fanciful design or invention b : a chimerical or fantastic notion c : FANTASIA 1 d : imaginative fiction featuring especially strange settings and grotesque characters -- called also fantasy fiction
4 : CAPRICE
5 : the power or process of creating especially unrealistic or improbable mental images in response to psychological need <an object of fantasy>; also : a mental image or a series of mental images (as a daydream) so created <sexual fantasies of adolescence>
6 : a coin usually not intended for circulation as currency and often issued by a dubious authority (as a government-in-exile)

That's just 1 definition though - there are many others. If you DNMC something because it is not a personal or attainable fantasy I believe you will be in the minority. The definition you are giving is based purely on assumption.

DPC has run Free Study more than once in the last 6 months. It seems like you are trying to be difficult just to cause problems.

Sounds like a good time to have a FOG MACHINE!

I haven't seen mine since we moved, though. :-(

You're damn right i'm difficult. There are no guidelines in these challenges, so its always a free study. There is no way to learn anything here anymore, its always who thinks has the best free study idea. I see a lot of good quality pictures that get voted down for personal choice, regardless of technical achievements. All because there is no structure.

So forgive me if i'm being rought, but by saying "check the dictionary", i do mean to look for the proper context of the word. 'Fantasy into reality' means a dream come true in 3 of my dictionaries, now you can't bring Dragons to reality, even if you wanted it a whole lot.

But as i said, i'm not participating in this challenge, 'cause i'm tired of Free Studies.

Sorry i caused so much trouble in trying to bring out some sort of guideline. I'm out.

I'm sorry to disagree with you RedOak. With photography you can make any dream come true if you're creative enough, even if they can't in real life.

biteme, you're missing my point. I'm not talking about photography, of course everything is possible, especially with a budget and 3D artworks.

I'm talking about the theme of the challenge. As an exemple to a lot of themes for challenges on dpchallenge. The definition of the challenge is vague, and everyone has their own little idea, which in turn, screws up a real change to a real vote system. So a lot of people get wrong votes because the votees didn't feel good about their entry, or though it was not the proper theme.

with a real jury and/or a definite theme, this doesn't happen. And since i came to DPC.com to learn about photography, i find it harder and harder to achieve anything since usually, what i get is "does not mean challenge" votes, while i'm sure it does.

that's what i mean.

The description says turn A fantasy in to a reality, not YOUR fantasy into reality.
01/16/2006 02:23:04 PM · #24
Sorry RedOak, misunderstanding. I get your point and I might agree with you on that subject.
But I don't think you shoud stop entering for this, you might learn from the process you're in, from the moment you have the photo in your head untill it's on screen. That's my vision on it, but everybody's got other intentions with this site I guess :)

I'm expecting a lot of colour-shifted images, IR's, or what people call "altered reality" shots by shooting something everyday and hammering the crap out of it with PS.

It'll be interesting to see what the really creative people come up with to show us their fantasy, a fantasy, whatever.

I'm probably sitting this one out.
