Okay, you have to understand I have never done anything like this, and I don't want to say or do anything inappropriate on this thread, so if I do, please let me know if I should change some wording or something.

Here is the story:

My neice is having her 13th birthday on Feb. 2nd. Her mother is a single mother raising 3 children, one of which has a mild form of autism. She doesn't get child support for Shawnee (my neice's name) because she was very lucky gain custody of her at all because the case fell under the Native American court (her father is Native American) To say the least, they are very poor.

Shawnee has been raised by stepfather after stepfather and has no real strong male figure in her life. 13 is a pivotal age in a girl's life. She is a good kid. She is very creative and loves life, but she lives in a small town where it is easy to fall into the wrong crowd. I am worried a little bit.

I want to be there for her to support her creativity. I have taken her out a couple of time to take pictures with her, showing her a few tips. The thing is, she doesn't have a camera. There isn't a camera in her whole house. A family of three that doesn't have a way to keep their memories. Every time I am near her, she asks to play with my camera and she has a really good eye. So I am calling on my community of online friends in hopes that perhaps you can help me.

I don't have the money to buy her a camera outright. Because they don't have a computer, I would love to be able to get her one of those kodak easy share cameras that comes bundled with the printer dock. The reason I thought digital is because I can see that if I got a film camera, she wouldn't ever have film or the money to get it developed.

So here is my suggestion:

I know that this community has helped others before, and I thought that they might be able to help this girl now. If just a few of us donated $10, or $20, or even $5, I think we will be able to join forces and get this girl the inspiration she needs to keep her occupied, with an outlet for her creativity. I, myself will start by giving $50 to the pot and promise to keep her supplied with printer paper so she can always print out her treasures.

If anyone would like to help this girl out, just go to paypal and send money to "fox25guy@cox.net" give as you feel you can. You will be helping a young lady create a little bit of stability in her life. Can you imagine how happy this girl will be opening a present on her birthday that says "from your friends at DPCHALLENGE"?

Thanks in advance.

Oh, by the way... here is a sample of one of the photos she took on one of our trips together.

Hmm...usually people are more responsive. I will match your start - give me a day or two to transfer the monies. Perhaps more if I can, but at least another 50.00 will come your way.

wow! that is increadible! thank you so much! I figure that the kodak camera/printer is about $200, plus she will need a storage card making our total under $250 to raise to help a young lady experiance the power of photography that we all feel. We are up to $100 so far. remember that every little bit helps. Thanks again alienyst for getting the ball rolling.

No problem! Most welcome! Oh, by the way, pretty nice photo too! I like it. I would like to see more of her stuff in the future! Just made it a fav - reminds me of being on the family farm in Geneva for some reason.

PayPal says it takes 3 to 4 days for the transfer from my bank. As soon as I see it in my account I will make the transfer to yours.

You might want to check out Ebay for a PII laptop. I got a couple of Dells that were used but good working condition for $70 each including shipping for my boys.

Thanks for that tip. I'll start with the cam, then work on a computer ;) Thanks for all the help guys. Here is how we stand now:

I found an sd card for $35.52, shipped.

The camera and printer are $204.81, shipped.

This brings the total to $240.33.

Including my inital investment and alienyst that is still pending, we have a total of $183.17.

That is so good you guys. I really am impressed. With just a few more small donations, we will be in business. I am so proud to be a part of such a generous community.

by the way, I promise to take a picture of her opening her present so you can all see her joy.

Just dropped the few dollars remaining on my Paypal balance into the pot - you can thank a lady in Tennessee who bought some old spice tins from me on eBay :)

That is awesome. We are chipping away at the balance. Good idea to use the paypal balance. I know I often have some floating around there for months. Even if it is just a little bit, it helps.

Are you able to accept payments with credit cards? If so, I'll be happy to contribute a little
01/16/2006 08:39:30 PM · #22
hmmm... never noticed that paypal doesn't let you send money without starting an account... Let me see if I can do some coding and create a web page that will allow you to do that.

Kudos to you! 13 is a pivotal age; right about when I started going awry. I had a mentor in the form of my aunt, and she really changed my life.

I'm making a small donation right now. Please keep us posted!

Okay, I built a little page on my site that will allow you to donate even without a paypal account. Click This Linkand then click "donate" The next page will ask for shipping, but just check the radio that says "no shipping required" and then continue.

The rest will be a normal credit card check out to my paypal account. I can't thank you guys enough.
