What does everybody consider an "average score"? Above 4, 5 ....

If I think an image is average I give it a five.

Actually, the average score is 5,5 because it is precisely half way between 1 and 10. If you calculate the average score from all challenges to date you would find a number close to that I guess.
01/13/2006 02:48:20 PM · #4
I reckon 5.2 is about the mid point for most challenges, but the mathematicians will be able to prove that 5.5 is THE point.

Funny, I was thinking about this last night. Yes, 5.5 would be average, but what is the actual average for the last year. Maybe some excel expert can run the numbers and see ? I would guess the average is around 5.35.

I'm not sure I agree that 5 would be the site average (although I admit I have no hard evidence for my theory)

The reason I think it would be lower than 5 is that it would seem to imply that in any given challenge there are just as many 10's given out as there are 1's

More people receive lower scores here than they do higher scores. The highest averaged score ever given out on the site is an 8.6 - the lowest is a 1.8.

If you were to average all of the "averaged scores" (the final results of a challenge) I believe the average score on the site would be a lot closer to 4.

Good point, this is how I'd probably gauge it at....

I try to get all my entries over 6. I believe my photography is worth that much so i try to push my average up. Athough this site is not the best of place to get properly evaluated.

Ok, I'm board, so I had my admin. run a excel sheet on the average score for 2005. She came up with 133 challenges with an average score for the year of 5.282398. Well that makes me almost average right on the nose.

edit; typos, should had her respond, love being the boss.

I love it, YOU were bored so you had someone else do it for you LOL :)

Ok but thats just an average score for one challenge. For a true average of the typical score you need to average everyones scores from every challenge, looking at the high and low to find a median total member (participant) score.

My average received is: 6.0312 :-)

You might want to do this just for 2005; the site's seen an explosion of size and aprticipation since it started, so the early challenges are skewing the results I think?

Thats the average for 133 challenges not one (all challenges in 2005). Wouldn't that be the average for the site for 2005?

Maybe for the high (and possibly low) score, but the average is close... ace calculated it (had it calculated) for 2005 - it is 5.282398 for 2005, v. 5.2941 for 2001-now

I still think the data is skewed though. You have a variable which never remains constant: people start at different times, leave altogether, etc. So you have the totals based on someone who has only 1 challenge vs someone who has 100+ challenges. It would be intersting to see the data compared against a "time on server" grid to be able to plot where a member "should" be based on number of challenges entered.

Last summer, I wrote a program to parse through the user profiles and analyze voting. The referenced graph shows the distribution of average vote by person at DPC:

The 4.9 - 5.2 range is where the action is.
01/13/2006 06:01:17 PM · #21
why is there a spike at 9.9?

Compared to a standard school percentage grading scale here is how DPCers rate photographs:

Avg Score: 5.2593....... Average Grade: F
Avg Top Score: 7.3433... Average Blue Ribbon Grade: C (minus)

It is rare when a score gets an 8 and that only takes it to a low B range.

Out of the 10s of thousands of images scored at DPC not one has been rated an A.

We'd ream our kids if they came home with scores on tests and homework like that.

Conclusion:
DPCers grade harsh!

Or maybe the REAL average is not 1-10 but 3-7 here. So what you really want to aspire to is not an un-attainable 10 but a blue-ribbon winning 7. Given that, isnt the real average exactly 5.00 ?

I've always been kind of been suprised that the "average" photo on DPC is below average.

Seeing the average for 2005 (5.2799), I don't feel so bad anymore: 9 challenges, 5.254918 (just below "average")
