My wife gave me a nice Christmas gift... A home made coupon good for a photography magazine subscription. So it is decision time... what photography magazine would you choose?

Edit: And Why?!?

depends what you're into...

PICTURE is a good magazine that I always read cover to cover.

I also like Popular Photography, but it's not as 'professional' for some reason...seems like there's more pertinant info in PICTURE. I also get uhm...dang can't remember the name, but it's made in Canada from time to time.

Good point. I'll tell you a little about me, but I want to leave it as open as I can: I'm an amature (by far)hobbiest. I like to dabble in a little of everything. From macro to landscape. Still life to Wild life. I shoot only digital now. I need to learn in all areas (from composition through to post processing).

I subscribe to several.

You should see the reading material in my bathroom. Just imagine a dentists office.

Anyway...

I get PCPhoto, American Photo, Photoshop, Popular Photography, and Shutterbug.

Enough to cut down an acre of forest a day!

...i feel guilty ;<

If your equipment junkie Shutterbug is the only way to go. Photo District News (PDN) is tops for keeping up with the industry, legal issues, etc. American Photo is (or used to be ?) a classic magazine that concentrates on Art and some equipment reviews, but IMO have become too clebrity photoish. My current favorite is Digital Photo Pro. They seem to have a good balance of technical articles, equipment reviews, and editing tips, etc. Not alot of info if your like me & still shoot film. And my last suggestions for a pure art mag would be Aperature or B&W.

edit for typos & to add that I find Pop Photo very amateurish and has such little content that it can be digested in one bathroom session.

Rangefinder is great - get that free yes.

Other than that, Shutterbug, American Photo, PHOTO, Digital Photographer and the such are pretty boring. Pop photo is ok. Outdoor Photographer is great, but honestly Rangefinder is free and the best of the ones we get. I would get Rangefinder and Popular Photography or Outdoor Photography

My two favourites:

B&W Magazine and Photo Life.

Pretty much the only magazines I always buy. They're worth looking at.

I like Outdoor Photography.

Rangefinder is free and it's awesome: //www.rangefindermag.com/subscribe/

It is. Comes out bi-monthly, made in Canada, but I've seen it sold in the USA (at Barnes & Nobles) and they offer subscriptions to the USA.

I'm going to second OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHER. It is my bible. I love that one. I also like AMERICAN PHOTO, but it is a very different pub. I think pop. photography gets a little wraped up in tech. stuff instead of actual picture taking articles, but I still get it and read it cover to cover every month.

Depends on what you like to shoot. But I'll add my vote in for Outdoor Photographer.

I got a Photo Life subscription for my bday...which was in May. I got my first magazine in November. A little screwy, but it was worth the wait. Awesome photography, and a tricksy photoshop article. I really dig. Dig mucho.

I get it too (part of the package deal when you're a member of APS). But have you seen Better Photography? For my money it's a better magazine.

Thanks for all the great input!!!
Here is a summary of some of the comments so far... anyone care to add and expand?

Photo Life: Canadian Bi-monthly - rec’d several recommendations

Outdoor Photography: Received the most recommendations

Popular Photography: “less professional,” “amateurish,” “Gets Technical,” but several recommend

Rangefinder: Free and praised - //www.rangefindermag.com/subscribe/

PCPhoto:

American Photo: “concentrates on Art and some equipment reviews, but IMO have become too celebrity photoish”

Photoshop:

Shutterbug: lots of equipment review

Photo:

Lenswork:

Picture:

Digital Photographer: “boring” by one description

Aperature: pure art

B&W: pure art

Digital Photo Pro: balance of technical articles, equipment reviews, and editing tips, etc

Photo District News (PDN): more for people in the industry, covers legal issues

edit: spelling, added one

If I could only have one it would be Aperture. If I need to know about equipment I look on the internet. This is photography minus the how-toos and without all the sales pitch.

I also like Picture, Lenswork and sometimes American Photo.
