its a very good camera, but do figure out 'why' you want it.

if its for the 'Cool factor' that's not a good excuse.
If you want the full sensor but you don't need the rapid burst, the 5D is excellent.
If you want the megapixels... then you gotta have it.

Honestly, for the investment, i think the 5D is plenty, for half the price (only 4 mpixels dif.)

5D too slow...maybe if you only shoot weddings...heck, it may be too slow for that...especially at that price. I think you'd be better off with a d200 ;-)

Just tell your wife it's a psychological investment; you'll feel like more of a man, if you get my drift?

I have the 5D, the 1DsII is too much of a beast for me... I would like to have the framerate of the 1DsII though....

but I just bought the EOS 1V with booster...I can get up to 10fps now :)

I think you may be confusing the 1D MkII with the 1Ds Mk II.

The OP is talking about the $8000 (USD) 16.7mp 1Ds MkII which has the same 3 fps speed of the 5D. The 1D MkII, however, has the 8.5fps (which most reviewers say is more like 8.0 or 8.2fps in reality). Are you sure you shot the 1Ds MkII? The bodies are very similar but the 1D MkII is more of a sports model.

To the OP:
You don't need one. Now convince us why you do? What do you shoot? What do you want to shoot that requires that ungodly machine. I can tell you why I would like to add a 1Ds MkII. What do you think you're going to get besides the "geek out" factor?

EDIT: I stand corrected. The 1Ds Mk II has a 4fps speed but its buffer is smaller than the 5D's.

I have a hasselblad, which I used professionally for 20 years. Now I tried "You know my Hasselblad, well if I bought a digital one it would £25,000, look how much I am saving at just £4,800." Didn't work.....

hrmm...I didn't realize there was a difference. I believe it may have been a 1dmkII (how about throw an "N" on the end too maybe??? 1dmkIIN???).

Go ahead, if you want it, just buy it.

As for your wife, remember that it's easier to beg forgiveness than to ask permission.

OK, I am not interested in the "cool factor". I used to be a professional Portrait and wedding photographer. Since buying a digital, I have developed a thirst for the business again (not weddings though) I need a reliable, robust, high pixel high quality camera so that I can become more serious than I am now.

A magazine (which shall remain nameless, in case it goes pear shaped) wants to do a six page spread on a project of mine, if it comes off I could be looking at "semi pro" and who knows in the future.

So I feel it's a need not a want.

because you were a working pro and the quality you get from these consumor grade POS cameras is just aweful. Also the lenses that you own, except the 16-35mm will have to be replaced for this camera so that's a plus. Because you have too much money in the bank account. Because weather sealing is important to you. Because you need to blow up heavy crops of photos to 24 x 36". Because you can hit a mugger with it, unlike that camera you have now. Because the 5D just won't cut it.

I think you could do just as well with a used 1Ds @ 11mp (ca $3000 USD) for sharpness & clarity if you're going to be shooting in well-lit situations. If you think you'll be shooting with less than outstanding lighting situations I'd say a 5D would be great since it sounds like you won't need the 45 autofocus zones (unless its something like sports). With 9 AF zones + 6 "helper" AF points you should be able to shoot any still life or even posed shots with no problem & save yourself 1/2 the money while producing shots that will easily be acceptable for full-page spreads. I think some of Manny's (librodo) shots were with a much lower res camera & they were printed a couple of times in UK mags.

(A) I'm sure there are numerous other photogs on DPC who've had their work printed I just remember Manny's stuff and

(B) after listing why I think a $3000 (USD) camera body might be just as good for you I think that if you want it, go get it. I know I would.

Camera "needs" that generate income are a different thing altogether.

If you are making money with your camera I know guys that simply put the crap on credit.

When I dropped the hammer on my gearit was right after I quoted a job to shoot 125 rings for a catalogue and posters at $120 a ring (plus a clipping path). I got the job and BOOM!!! I bought my gear the following monday...more money than I spent on my last car!

Need for a job is a different story than want.

You may have some very good points there, obviously, I am not mad keen to throw nearly £5,000 into a camera if I can get the same quality and robustness for less. Thanks all for you views, I suppose it's me who needs convincing, not the wife.

The 1dMkIIN is the upgraded sports/journalism body. Basically exactly the same as the 1dMkII with some tweaked software to allow more customisation and a really nice, bigger LCD on the back. Pretty much everything else is the same. 8ish fps, great camera.

The 1ds MkII is the top end landscape/ portrait/ architecture body. Highest resolution of all the Canon pro bodies, not as fast.
