If you want the short answer just read the bolded bit... ;o)

I'm an IT Trainer, in the main part, but also develop courses, write documentation and occasionally dabble in website design (with my handy partner doing the hard work/ coding).

He (Pete/ Ganders) is a programmer/ developer and we both set up a Ltd company in 1997 for him to contract through. In March last year I took the rather scary decision to also become a freelancer so am now also working for our own company.
It's a bit strange because, unlike the pattern for programmers, trainers are seldom hired on full time short term contracts - most clients want to book odd days here and there with occasional long term bespoke projects. Luckily my last permanent job gave me a lot of experience on those so I'm mostly managing to get work but it's either deathly quiet for several weeks on end (as my fellow DPC Fanatics chatroom buddies can attest to) or it's manic and everyone wants me to do a job for them at once!
I'm only now finally coming to grips with that.
What I do love is the flexibility in terms of time off and being able to say no if I want to. What is harder is balancing finances when there is not a huge regular monthly income for either of us (we take reasonable salaries and then anything else we earn we can't get at till the end of the company year). It's also weird having to bill people and chase up payment. And suddenly one has to not only be skilled in one's own job but also in sales and marketing!
I am sure a lot of you who have travelled the self employed path know what I mean.
Truly I'm happy with what I do, which is a really positive thing in today's workplace.

Warmest regards to all of you, whatever you do, wherever you do it.

full time unemployed.

My previous three (of one million) business cards stated:

- Information Architect
- Senior Consultant
- Software Specialist

but basically I am a software developer with a very old past as a hacker (but do not tell it to anybody, please, they think is a bad thing).

Everybody can hire me.
Even a full time mom.

Having spent some years as a Lighting Designer (theatre and some other stuff), I'm now a Sound Engineer: bit of music, bit of theatre, bit of corporate. Pondering whether trying to make money out of photography would kill my interest in it ...
