sigh ....
for those who commented,
and for those who thought it was a computer screensaver
(and the idiots who gave me 1's 2's & 3's {get a life})

it was based on experiments after viewing
i could'nt get a flashlight to work .. i had tried a red laser pointer
but just too much saturaition / so as a early xmas gift i ordered a green laser pointer / did 3 rolls of B&W spirals for my film enlarging class
(& ended up with a A+ based on this method (and a wonderfull 11x14 print im my living room) )

reset everything up for the pattern challenge but below are some out takes from Nov and Xmas day when i did it for the challenge

roughly 10 sec with a 60watt
roughly 1 sec with a repeated flash
these range from 90sec - 3min. done in pitch black room

thank you for the comments

edit:for typos

truly cool shots! Sorry more didn't understand or see past what they know into what it could be.

Wow. I didn't vote in this one, but if I had, you'd have gotten 10s from me. Those are just really, really cool. Looks like a fair amount of work went into creating them, it's too bad they didn't do better.

dude, your photo got a perfect curve, I don't know what more you can ask for. How about be happy with your 4th place finish instead of coming off like a little spoiled brat. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion...and they voiced it on your entry...get over it.

I'm glad I had the opportunity to adjust my vote on this knowing how it was made. Great work, Ralph!

He clicked on the blue original - it finished 4th.

Everyone typically feels that their image was better than the 10 or 15 ahead of it unless they're in the top 10. Then it "must" be better than 1 or 2 other shots - that's why the entered it.

It wasn't - it's a cool pattern, and then? It's LIKE a screensaver - so you created a real life screensaver.. And you wanted this to beat what - the backlit snail? lol C'mon. The shots that finished ahead of you just have more to look at - more subject, more interest. Less "kewl" factor, but more photography.

Gotta respectfully disagree with you, Mav. The top 10 in the challenge are all good shots, I won't take anything away from them. But I also consider the apparent effort that went into the shots. Macros of things in and around your house may require set up, etc, but at the end of the day, ralphnev seems to, IMO, have gone the extra mile. He created his pattern. And all the setup and test shots that were required to get it right. It is somewhat unique - no one else seems to have thought of it - where as backlit objects, while beautifuly done, are rather common around here. His laser pattern is certainly cool, but I feel that it has just as much subject, interest, and actual photography as windows, rugs, and slinkys.

i bet you could get stars out of that laser if you had a long enough spring to get a wave pattern going.

even suspended from a really heavy piece of plastic string, like the stuff you put in a weed eater but heavier, so you can bounce a wave off the center of it.

that would really be cool.

i also saw at home depot they have really tiny mag lites with smoked filters you can put on them.

i don't have any idea or materials to do something like this but you have one killer picture there.

And therein lies the voting. :) He had hundreds of votes on his shot - that's where the voters felt it belonged. The voters are the audience and thus that IS where it belongs. You can give it a 10, I can give it a 6 and at the end of the day, the votes came in and not everyone liked it as much as you (the 10) and me (the 6) and the photographer (a 10).

All I'm sayin is I can understand - it looks like CGI. Not a photo. And I never consider "effort" only results - this is a great result, just not top 10 according to the voters.

maybe this is more of a rant against people who vote 1,2,3 ...
i didn't say i wanted a ribbon for it
and a won't detract from the ribbon winners ...

i also have to agree with odysseyF22, after seeing the time put into this shot and just the fact that he thought outside the box to create the shot....(that's an artist)....i think it should have scored higher and am sorry it didn't.

Almost every picture in every challenge gets a few 1's, 2's, or 3's. This has been discussed at extreme lenghts in the forums. From looking at the voting distribution on the picture in question, it appears to basically have a gaussian distribution centered around 6. We all have entered photos that we think will do better than they end up being received by the general voting population.

yes a few '1,2,3'

i beleive a good share of the those votes had been made by incorrect assumptions
01/04/2006 10:00:43 AM · #16
I was in 80th place in that Challenge...and I was kind of HAPPY with that, even after tramping around in the cold for hours to find a natural pattern I liked. :)
It's probably just personal preference...whether somebody likes "abstract" sort of images over things found in nature.
I'll swap my 80th place for your 33rd, if you like.

Excellent analysis, and spot on. The "What?" shot it was inspired by is much better - more variations in the light and shading, with more of a feeling of depth to it, and deservedly got a higher score and ranking. This shot is sort of cool (and I would kind of like to experiment with the technique myself), but very one dimensional. I think it actually scored a bit higher than it really deserved.

Is such retort any better or un-bratlike...

Frankly, the truth of the matter is many people vote something lower if they "think" it's not valid. I had one entry that bombed. But a lot of people thought it was just a "photoshop" effect when it was a natural photo.

It does get annoying when you put a lot of effort, into a good idea, and people won't accept it as real or simply DQ request it. And instead vote it low.

Bell curves show nothing regarding mis-understanding methods and legality of a photo.

And that's his point...you assumed in your bias it was CGI. And I believe he is right in that quite a few others did so as well.

And his point was that it was a technical photo (very well executed BTW).

Just as many people thought that this photo was a "photoshop" effect. It wasn't but I got scores from people who thought so. Who did not accept that it was a natural photograph. Some people who I responded to actually changed their votes once they realized what it was.

"I'm so glad you posted that image in the reflections thread. I've looked at it a couple of times, but never read your comments. I thought it was just a PS effect. Now that I know it's a reflection, I have an even greater appreciation. Very moody, and great texture."
- greatandsmall

It was a fairly challenging composition as it was a reflection in a granite war memorial stone on the beach across from a city point. (I actually hid the giant powerplant behind her.) But had the members voted ACCORDING TO THE RULES OF THIS SITE (which is to treat all photos as legal unless DQ'd. Instead I got votes based on the assumption I had merely used a photoshop effect). It's not a matter of photographic taste, but an assumed bias I broke the rules or did not compose the elements of the photograph. And as such, it is disappointing.

But to RalphNev, I will say this...that is the way the site plays out. It's a bum sometimes. But 33rd ain't bad. BTW....they now have blue & yellow laser's as well. ;)

yes & in retrospect the idiot line was 'out of line' ,

yellow would be cool / i priced blue at nearly a grand (1000$) for the smallest (OUCH..) so i have to wait for prices to drop ....

You can change a vote? I didn't know that. How?
01/04/2006 10:29:25 AM · #22
I agree. I think you were robbed.....well not exactly robbed but people were certainly biased. Next time someone does this it will probably ribbon, seeing how it was done and all.

Way to encourage comments and participation.... People vote how they like and threads like this ain't going to change that.

While voting is still active.

(ie: someone leaves a comment expressing. "Lame use of photoshop effect" and the photographer PM's "Not a photoshop, it's a reflection in granite gravestone." and they reply "Oh wow....I didn't realize....that's really cool...that is AMAZING!!!!"

I believe you have made the wrong assumptions. I voted your shot a 3 and this is twice now you have insulted me for my vote - first I am an idiot and now I am making wrong assumptions.

Your shot lacks any real focal point. The pattern is not all that unique. The quality of the photo is not top 10. The subject is very centered, only slightly high in the shot. Your title doesn't fit since motion is not apparent in the shot. I made no incorrect assumptions, did not think it was a screen saver, just a shot that for the challenge, in my opinion, was lacking strength.

You scored a 6.xx and 33rd. What are you whining about? Oh, that's right...us idiots who make wrong assumptions.
