Anyone who lives around the Toronto/Whitby area has got to check this place out.

The group of buildings are slowly being torn down and replaced with subdivisions and things, but what remains is amazing. The series of 'cottages' were first constructed in WW1 and housed patients. You can google up more of the history if you're interested.

A lot of these were taken at the powerhouse building... Enjoy :-)

I was accompanied by my friend Matt Vardy, I made him get a DPC account... He rocks, check him out! :-D

Cool photos. I really like 274112 (no title) and 'Industrial', the lighting and tones look great.

Hey Joey...
Great pics! You're not kdding when you describe the place... truly one of a kind and although it has a bit of a unique history, it will be missed when it's finally gone. I'm about ten minutes from there and go out to shoot in that area all the time... The lake down at the end of that road has some beautiful shores... :)
Happeed to spend some time in those buildings for work a few years ago and if you get the chance to really explore the upper floors of some of the smaller buildings, you'll find a world of unique and unusual feels that would lend perfectly to the type of stuff you do.

I suggest anyone that goes take some props such as, a girl in a gown (hospital or whatever) or a guy in a straight jacket.

Man it looks like yall took your own lighting. Great work Joey and Matt! Fabulous work.

Joey, Can you please tell me what all post-processing you did for image = 274177, 275172. I really liked the lighiting and the effects. I want to learn how you did it.

Joey these are great, I would love to be able to go and explore in a place like this.

We have a similiar hospital near us, it is still in use in a minor way but the public can use the grounds for picnics etc. The only problem is that some ex patients still hang around the grounds and can make your picnic pretty interesting.

My kids freaked out last time we went. That was 12 months ago and we all still get a laugh about it, I think it's time we went back, the kids should be old enough now to handle it ?. I'm a cruel dad...... heheheheheh

This place must be like wonderland to you. I guess you taking your camera to a decaying lunatic asylum is like putting a fish in the water. It just makes 'click'.
Got some more?

Hey! I live in Whitby and object to this slurring of our fine neighbourhood:)

Oh, does it matter that I am in Whitby, New Zealand which doesn't look like that at all?

It looks more like this ...

Neat pics.
I'd love to take pics of the one here that is being turned into a walmart one day (seems the locals would rather have a dangerous ruin than a tax paying business)
I've met the owner...when i worked in the area he was a customer. If i had a way to hunt him down perhaps i could get permission, but till then they are very strtict about no trespassing.
the local PBS station did a show on it a year or 2 ago.
Dixmont State Hospital. Opened in 1859 and Dixmont was completely self-sufficient with it's own morgue, factory, gardens, livestock, and much more. Had about 1,000 patients at one point. Closed in 1984 and abandonded since.

Supposedly haunted too!

Excellent shots Joey. Awesome material for band photos. I might have to flight you out to Connecticut in a year or two to shoot some photos for the next Bridgeshadows album.

(It'll be interesting to see what is captured when you've got a 20D with a 70-200mm f/2.8 IS mounted to it. ; )

I am very interested to know how Photoshopping techniques you applied, particularly on the following shots. Any chance you can show the before & after and give a casual run down of what you did? You always get these vibrant sub-dued earthtones that greatly appeal to my eye - and I am always curious to know what processing methods you use.
