Let me tell you how irritated I am right now....
As I was going thru the 'Night out' pix last night I came across
Not only is this a RIPOFF of [edit] pic, when confronted [user name] replied, "Why would you put a comment like that on someone's picture even if you felt that way couldn't you have asked? Would you like someone to comment on one of your submissions like you have on mine?"

What's your problem buddy? Why couldn't you have just conceeded and said, "Yes, you found me out, I'm sorry"? Instead of getting defensive and denying the truth!
Alot of people here try really hard to be ORIGINAL in their submissions, I find this very offensive.

See for yourself...
Exhibit A: Exhibit B:
I recommended this submission for disqualification and I suggest you all do the same. Is there any kind of penalty for this? Such as; suspension, restricted use or banning.

How in the world did you identify that exact picture, especially when the NASA composite was from March?

(I'm just curious; I am not ignoring the "topic" of your original post, but I will let a moderator deal with that)

Oh my goodness what a blatant disreguard for the rules! Wow Kali... not sure how you found this, but I really hope that the dpc enterer will be banned! This is just wrong...

I had a problem with that... it can only be existing artwork. I hadn't got around to saying so by way of a comment, but I don't see how this can be justified. Existing artwork must have something new brought to it to make a photo of it worthwhile. So, I would agree with a DQ.

The admins will take care of it. No need to get all excited. Good eye though.

Not even a good con artist, considering the number of times that photo has been pasted all over the internet.

well look y'all. he copy and pasted, so what, give him a low score. don't have to get all insane about it in my opinion. Its not like there is prize money at stake, or anyone will die from it. So he cheated, so what, cheat him into a low spot.

Please direct your DQ's in the appropriate way. There is a "suggest this image for disqualification" under each entry during voting. The Administrators and Site Council will look into it at that time.

Also, please do not try to confront other users via email. The Administrators can take care of that.

Thank you for your concern.. I appreciate this..just want it to be handled a different way.

APOD is one of my fav sites (besides DPC). So when I saw the submission I immediately remembered the APOD pic. It's a very distinct picture, not one to forget. I mean if you're gonna cheat at least make it realistic!

Obviously the person is not here to learn to be a better digital photographer. Just ignore him and he'll eventually get bored and go away.

Well, you must give people a chance to respond, and for the Admins to recieve verification.
It may not happen instantly.

:)

Hey i thought this wan an unmoderated forum?

Karen- sorry for my impatience... I just don't want this photo to have any chance at ranking when it's an obvious fraud.
07/09/2003 07:03:47 PM · #17
Unmoderated in that you can be upset and what not, but basic rules apply site wide.

Once upon a time Jerzy Kosinski (spelling help please) submitted, The Painted Bird, a book that had already been published, to publishing houses under a pseudonym. His point was that name recognition was what got books accepted by editors. Unsuprisingly it was turned down everywhere.

I had just been wondering what if a fictitious DPC person were created (with site approval) who would submit photos by well known photographers. We would then be tricked into voting and commenting on them without benefit of their reputation. Would they get the same percentage of 10s and 1s as most photos?

Maybe somene beat me to the idea?

So if nothing was ever said or done about it and his pic ranked higher than yours or even managed a ribbon, you wouldn't be even slightly pissed off?
Even the crappiest original pic is better than this ripoff. Which is why I can't understand for the life of me why it's still not DQ'd!
Karen sure was in a hurry to edit my post, yet this pic still gets votes... I'm throughly confused here.

Kali,

DQ requests are not processed instantaneously. It is a manual process, requiring human intervention by the site council, and in most cases the photographer is given an opportunity to respond. Rest assured we our doing our job, though sometimes the process takes a couple days to be resolved properly.

Please note that the fact that you believe that a photograph was not achieved legitimately should never affect your scoring. As per the site instructions, when recommending a photograph for disqualification, please make your request, vote as if the entry is valid, and move on. You should never act as judge, jury and executioner on any entry with regard to disqualification.

This is absolutely critial because in the early days of DPC a lot of people would mark a photograph down if they felt the photographer had cheated. In many of those cases, it turned out the photographer had done something really innovative and the effect was achieved legitimately, but the voting penalized those photographers for their innovation. Cheaters weren't hurt by the markdowns (since they were ultimately disqualified anyway) -- only honest participants suffered the penalty.

Again, the proper thing to do is not to give it a low score (for the reasons I specified above), but to recommend for DQ, vote as if the effect were achieved legally, and move on.

Ultimately if the entry is illegal, it will not matter how many votes it gets, it will be disqualified so those votes won't matter. Please understand that there are steps we have to go through; you're hardly ever going to get "instant gratification" on a DQ request.

Ok well thank you for clearing that up. If I know for a fact, because I have proof as with this, then I cannot continue on as if it was a legitimate photo and score it "as if the effect were achieved legally". If it was never DQ'd and my vote helped it to rank higher than last place... I would have a rough sleep that night and lose lots of faith in the fairness of DPC.

And if it turned out it was legitimate and your vote caused it to rank lower than it should have, how well would you sleep then? And in any case, why such a lack of faith that we (Site Council) will do our jobs?
