Hi all,

First of all: Merry Christmas!

I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on Studio Lighting?
I want to start and set up my own little Studio in my living room and need advice on what equipment to get first so I can gradually upgrade and add other things.

What I need are the basic important things and I'd like some advise on what brand is best etc.

I need the Studio to photograph People mainly. Never more than 3 at a time, really.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,
Sandy

Hello Sandy.

I don't own professional lighting equipment at all, just a couple of desk lamps. But if you want a starter kit, I suggest you go check out //www.alienbees.com/

If it's too expensive for you, you could always improvise with some 500W lamps and homemade softboxes...

Thank you Andrei.

I know there is a lot of equipment out there but I was hoping someone could advise me on what to get or even what better not to get before I spend my money on it?

Thank you,
Sandy

Alienbees are great, and so is Bowens, I'd suggest a 3 piece kit, it will set you back about $2000, but everything is included, softboxes, umbrellas and everything you need, and even a battery so you can use your kit outdors where there is no electricity.

I know it's expencive, but you could always buy the 2 piece kit and add the 3rd light later, that will save you about $700

but the 3rd light is actually really important in a portrait shooting..

here's an example

first the portrait

and then the setup

Hi Sandy. There are MANY threads discussing this same issue, try a few forum searches and read along as studio equipment is a BIG question and hard to answer in one thread.
