Hi Gang,
I'm about to order my Christmas present - a portable storage unit. At the moment, I think it's going to be the Wolverine 60gb Flashpac 7000. Wanted to see if anybody here has other suggestions.
I don't see any real need to view files on the device (opinions?), so I don't see the need to pay the extra money for that capability. Just need to get files off the CF cards without using a computer. Any suggestions for devices I should be looking at? Price range +-$225 US. |

I own a Wolverine 20gb, and unless the battery has been modified, you can only squeeze about 6 gigs in on a full charge.
The PD7x and PD70x are supposed to be the very best units as far as files transfer speeds. They rely on AA batteries, and have an LCD which displays a lot of useful information.
They are based out of Singapore I believe, so the one caveat is that if you encounter an issue with the drive, sending it there and back could take some time.
Buf if your unit works well, you will be amazed at how fast it can transfer files (1 gig in 3 min I believe) and how long it lasts (50 gig per full charge).

I have a unit from kangaroo and love it but would love to upgrade to something that would allow me to view the image or I've been weighing the pros and cons of getting one that rights straight to CD...not sure.

You are better off not having the option to view on your storage device, it just sucks up battery time.
I have a little 20gb drive, and ya, only saves about 5-6 gb before needing to be plugged in or recharged. So that is something to keep in mind, (mine is a different brand and several years old). |

| Thanks for the input. I think I'll go ahead with the Wolverine. They do say somewhere that 6 gigs is about what to expect from the battery. That's a lot of pictures, though. I've never come close to shooting that much at any one time, so I don't see that as a negative. |

Well, in that case, I'll say the Wolverine has never failed me. And I shoot 6 gigs alot. I used to shoot raw with 1Dmk2 cameras. Now I shoot mostly jpeg, but shoot more, so often times I will need 2 2gb cards to get filled.
I think the last issue is the speed. 6gb may not be a problem, but 15 minutes per gig is very slow. if you could find something faster perhaps, forget that it means more gigs, it also means if you're short on cards, you don't have to deal with waiting for it to finish uploading to switch cards.
