For example, I know that you don't really go to film school to learn filmmaking, but to meet people who can give you a leg up in the industry. The only way you'll ever learn film is to be on a set, not a classroom. But photography is so independent I wonder what you can really get out of studying it? With taking those basic classes you have to take, wouldn't you just be re-learning things you already do naturally (saying if you're like elsapo and rock naturally)? And wouldn't that kind of set you back?

I dunno, I'm just trying to figure out what to do with my life. I mean, I know what I want, but I was just wondering what all your guys' take was on the college thing.

Thanks. :)

I'm studying photojournalism and for me, it really is just re-learning things you already know. But that makes the classes really easy and fun....as opposed to being a first timer. But I think the real reason I'm doing it is because most magazines and newspapers won't really look at your portfolio unless you have a colelge diploma. So it's not really a matter of learning new things....it's just a matter of getting a signed piece of paper that tells employers that you know what you are doing.

That's my take on it...

understood. that is what I'm doing also. though I'm majored in port and commercial. I'll be done in two years, I just have to work my butt off for it.

I stayed in Sao Paulo, but went to Rio for a week and we had our hotel on Copacabana. Maybe I'm crazy but it didn't seem to dangerous with all the lights, and police walking around. :-P Do you speak any portuguese?

NO... bit of a problem hey, i realised last year, but i'm armed with my phrase book and hand gestures so we'll see how that goes :)
i got mugged in my first week there last year, maybe just bad luck but i've actually heard of many such stories.

Lots of pain :D

Well, freshman year you might not be working so much (or at least I'm not, partially because I'm lazy and partially because I didn't really take incredibly taxing classes) but I have upperclassmen friends who spend about 27 hours a day working in the clusters. That is only a slight exaggeration by about 3 and a half hours :)

Then again, I'm at CMU, and we do everything pretty f'ing hardcore like that...

dang, I'm 4 weeks shy of 23....that doesn't make me 'old' does it?

I'm David, just turned 21 about two weeks ago.

I turn in one more paper tomorrow which I should be working on, then no more school for six weeks. Then I graduate in May with a degree in film production and an emphasis in cinematography. And then I hopefully find a job other than the crappy part time retail job I currently have.

And I like to take photos too, obviously, although they don't do very well here.

sweet. a youth revolution.

I'm Ali and I'm a 17 year old senior in High school. I'm taking Digital Photo at a local community college this semester, but I think I learned more from DCP than my class.
I realy would love to study photojournalism next year at college. Who knows. My future is completely in the air.

I know how you feel..I'm still pretty uncertain about what I'm doing. But photojournalism is what I'm really pursuing right now.

Haha...as for the youth revolution....oh yeah. We should come up with a name for our group...someting catchy and then we can all put it in our signatures and profiles, lol. It would be really neat if we could get our own sub-forum...that would make my day.

Well no matter what your major is in college you usually get the oppurtunity to take a variety of different courses. In my opinion there are way too many people in college just chasing that diploma piece of paper so they can get a job yadda yadda.

College is a time to find your interests, and learn about yourself and what you like and don't like. It's also a great time to get experience. If you are a great photographer you will get work, college degree or not.

I'm not studying photography but since I take courses in it and work for the paper, it requires me to just keep on shooting, and gives me unique opportunities....which is what ultimately make you better. Hopefully people aren't there just to get a job. With photography its experience and portfolio that will usually get you that, not so much a diploma. Too many people value college in the employment they get afterwards, you need to look at how it benefits you as a person. Counting things using money is never accurate. Money is dumb.

ugg. I feel the same way. It seems that all anyone above the age of 35 can say to me is, "so Ali. Where are you going to school next year? what are you planning to major in? what is every detail of your life you have planned from now untill you are 40?"

As for photo classes, I wasn't quite sure what to expect before, but now I love them. This year is acctualy my first year of having the at all. I'm taking digtal and Darkroom at the same time, and I have found them to be alot of "Go out and shoot what you want. Show me the world through your lens.", which to me is wonderful. Who knows about if the schooling is only to make it into the biz. I suppose, regaurdless, I would just like to study something I love.

-THREADREVIVAL-

I skipped out on doing the introductory post so like. Hi. Most people whom I see face-to-face call me Vincent (which is not my given name, nor is it a variant of my given name, or even anything close to my given name...) so I suppose you people can, too. I'm 18, a freshman CS major at Carnegie Mellon (up here in DREARY PITTSBURGH) and I've been taking pictures since someone stuffed a camera in my hands when I was 2, but moreso in the past three or four years, I suppose, after we got a digital camera and my parents stopped crying about 'wasting film'.

I spend a lot of my time either sleeping, or not sleeping, watching wonderfully shitty movies, blasting music in my suite at 3 in the morning after all of my suitemates went home for winter break, stuffing my face with graham crackers...eh, actually, that's just what I've been doing for the last few days. I love exam week when all my exams are finished and my flight home isn't until a week afterwards.

We need to come up with something more interesting to do so the thread doesn't die :o

I played this picture-post game somewhere else once, I dunno if it's been done at DPC or not. But like, one person requests a photograph of something, and the next person posts a picture of it and then requests something else...or something like that. If people are interested then the next person can start :D

I'm trying to decide now if I should go for a real job or take the plunge and try out photography as a career. I'm going to do an internship in the fall, and I have to decide if I'm going to do that with a major photographer or with something more related to my major. Big decision :/

modgethanc....I saw you poked me on the facebook...

well, I poked you back...mwha.

I feel horrible, I've been sick the last few days and it's only getting worse...ugh. I slpet forever last night...but I still feel really tired. Anyone want to come take care of me...and my every need? :P

My camera get's over on ebay tonight...which means I'm ordering my new one tommorow. Mmmhhmmmm....can't wait. Ok, well I'm going to go eat some soup and try and relax a little. Later homedogs

12/19/2005 01:25:03 PM · #74
New cameras rock man, what one? And feel better, eat soup. One of my friends here said that you should wear socks to bed when you get sick. I don't know why, but I guess it can't hurt...

And you gotta love facebook...best way to waste time ever :P
12/19/2005 03:20:01 PM · #75
Yeah...I never wear socks really... Maybe I'll give it a whirl. I just got done eating some tomato soup and a grilled cheese....mmmmm.

I'm getting a Panasonic FZ30... I really like my rebel, but I want a camera with a fixed lense and really good glass in it. Mostly because I'm tired of carrying around all the lenses and having to switch them out whne I want to zoom in more. The FZ30 has something like a range of 32mm-410mm...not too shabby at all. It has more MP too and not to mention a leica lense..so it's all gravy.

Check out this picture I just took:

I was bored and trying to take some more abstracts...but I thought this turned out pretty cool. Anywho...Ima go take some more pictures...cause that's what I do. Later
