i've been bitten by the IR bug :) i love this stuff..

I've only had the filter for a few days, but i cant stop using it.. here are a few examples of pics i've gotten in the past few days, walking around the neighborhood:

//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=27402
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=27403
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=27404
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=27405

Processing:

The shots are taking in Nightshot mode, so they look a little greenish out of the camera.

I go in photoshop, and use the levels command, then go in options and choose the following things:

Using the "Find dark and light colors" algorithm,
Snap Neutral midtones on,
Target clipping down to 0.20% for both white and black.

Then i adjust the gamma to taste.. and voila, B&W IR.. now, some of these have a slight color tint, but i like keeping that.. gives it a mysterious look.

I need to experiment more with the Manual mode shots, but i'll need more time than i have rioght now for testing it.. Nightshot mode is ncie since it'a sll automatic, but since i dont have any ND filters, i have to limit myself to shooting at dusk.

enjoy :)

Hey André, those shots are great! After all the time I've been spending here I've realised the value that using filters can bring, and the next step (once I've got more money) is to upgrade my camera to one where i can fit filters (oh and do lots of useful manual options too, thats gonna be a must :o)

Infrared is awesome. Its definitely a medium that works with only certain subjects. I've never seen anyone scoring a goal in infrared or seen a centerfold in infrared. But older buildings, nature shots are always cool in infrared. I've definitely started picking my shots in infrared more wisely. And as important, picking the right days for it.

Your pics look like you're getting the hang of it. I'm hoping mine will get better with more experience. I've found that shooting in sepia mode is the ticket for me. Full color mode makes everything a pukey magenta color.

Question from someone who doesn't know anything about infrared (but I like the picts I've seen). Is "infrared" post-processing or in camera? TIA.

agwright, that's an awesome shot. What did you do in photoshop to get the beautiful colors?

Thanks, Dan

Infrared is a filter. Mine is a Hoya R72. Got it at //www.2filter.com for pretty cheap. I only have one pic I did for a challenge with it, but for the money, its does pretty good stuff.

Thanks, but, how do you use a filter with the C-5050Z? Is there an adaptor? Can you use other filters, like the gradated and coloured? Can you use Cokin filters?

(Sorry, I got interested here, I didn't realise you could use filters with the C5050)

in photoshop element open the photo which is "pukey magenta color" then I auto levels and save the photo

then open it in Photoshop and switch the red and blue channels

and the end resuit is "//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=27547"

FYI:

ISO was 100
F22
30 seconds exposure on a Dull/sunny day

PS I used a Filter.

Nice pics. I didn't realise you could get such dramatic IR shots in digital using IR filters. I have used IR film before in my SLR but it's a pain with all the bracketing to get a decently exposed shot.

Deffinatly getting a IR filter for my digi cam now. :)

Expecting my IR filter today! WOOHOO!! Great tips I have read here and another forum. Questions I haven't found answers to yet.
1. What about white balance? Does changing it affect image? I have made some "digital filters" that I have had good results with. May just have to try them and see what happens.
2. Shooting in B&W, how does it turn out? Sure there is not pukey red color, but does it keep the image "intact" (ie: without having to post edit in PS-better results post editing?).
3. anyone used with the Nikon 5700?
4. More tips please! (C:

Ive used IR in place of an ND filter (coz I dont have 1 yet) to do long exposures of flowing water etc. Comes out nice. You should try it.
I dont have any online yet so I cant post them, unless I can insert a thumb of my HD somehow......Anyone?

Great images.. I've been lusting after an IR filter for months. SO many accessories so little money.

Does Cokin make an IR? Since I already have the holder and other filters from them, I'd think it would be cheaper than the Hoya/

Beautiful stuff, Refracted. I love the third one, too.

Pitsamen, great shots.

I love how everything appears snow covered. Cool effect.
