Dr. Achoo,

Thank you so much for starting this thread. My wife and I tremendously enjoy finding little independent and foreign movie gems. Have seen several in the past month since joining Inttelliflex. "Rabbit Proof Fence" is, whitout a doubt, one of our most favorites. Now we are trying to find out a little about "Born to Bordellos" which oddly enough is suppose to be about photography.
Please pass along the titles of any other films you found of interest.

drydoc, check out my blog. I have movie reviews of lots of independent films. Let me see if I can give you a few suggestions right here. of course I don't know your taste at all...

Twilight Samurai. Best foreign film I watched from 2004. It's a slowly unfolding drama though.

The Story of Weeping Camel. Interesting just because it gave you a real glimpse at a culture we thing nothing about (Mongolian). Almost more documentary than drama (although it isn't).

Touching the Void. Ya. This one was awesome. True story drama about a mountain climbing accident.

House of Flying Daggers
Maria Full of Grace
Super Size Me. Great documentary.
Napoleon Dynamite. OK, this is a cult thing, so no promises here.

I watch a lot of independent and foreign movies and love going to short film festivals.
Here in Australia "Rabbit Proof Fence" was more of a mainstream movie but it is still an excellent film and a lot of credit for that goes to the Director Phillip Noyce . He's directed hits such as "Patriot Games", "Clear and Present Danger" and the "Bone Collector".

My favourite Phillip Noyce film would have to be "Dead Calm" staring Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane. This film was made in the late eighties and probably launched the careers of both these actors.

Dr. Achoo and keebow,

Thank you both for the response.

All of those films by Noyce are very good. We liked them all.

Heard that "Story of Weeping Camel" is a great film and it is already in my que.

Dr. A. It looks as if our taste in films are similar. Saw "Maria Full of Grace," House of Flying Daggers," an ""Supersize me." All great.

Not to much in cult films, howerver, the "Rock Horror Picture Show." still gets watched after all these years!!!

Just saw "Bend it Like Beckham" yesterday. Found it light and easy.

Dr. Achoo, how do I go about getting to your blog? Heard of them but never have seen one.

There's a link in my profile. Or you can just click here.

Keegbow. I saw Dead Calm way back then and still get a flutter about Nicole. She had that awesome dark red hair and I instantly became a fan. RRRRawrrr!! Zane was also great it that one.

All those movies I mentioned Drydoc were from 2004. Looking back at my blog (you get get to more movie review by looking for a link at the very bottom) I can highly recommend Crash from this year. Awesome film.

Great blog Doc..

"Crash" is the best American movie I have seen this year.Messages galore in this movie with racial conflict bubbling beneath the surface.

This movie to me is what film making should be about. The interplay between characters is fantastic with so many twist and turns.

Yeap, Rabbit Proof Fence definitely a must-see. Heard Crash was a tough one. Just waiting to get into the right mood for it. Have Weeping Camel and Flying Daggers on my list to do as well.
Some other old and not so old gems:
- Red Violin
- Raise the Red Lantern directed by Zhang Yi Mou
- Ju Dou, same director
- Hero, also Chinese
- Farewell My Concubine, same
- The Motorcycle Diaries (Argentinian)
- L'Auberge Espagnole (French) and its sequel Les Poupees Russes
- Un long dimanche de Fiançailles (French)
- Amelie (French)
- Children of Heaven (Irakien or Iranien, can't quite remember)

Wow, I really feel uncultured the only foreign films I've seen are Bend it Like Beckham, and Bride & Predujice. I haven't even heard of most of the other foreigns mentioned.

Crash is okay, worth seeing I guess.

Man on Fire is a good underrated thriller.

Just watched Children of Heaven last week. Liked it a lot. Have seen Red Violin, Amelie (of course), Hero and I believe Raise the Red Lantern. I'll have to check some of those others out.

"Uncultured" and "foreign" are relative don't you think? :) From where I come from (and I don't mean France), all I see are foreign movies. So, these are no different. They're just not mainstream 'coz I'm generally a movie nut and will watch anything that looks remotely interesting. Besides, didn't someone say "the world is my oyster". I feel a bit like that. If I had it my way, there would be only one kind of citizenship - world citizen! In my dreams only of course.

Oh, silly me, of course I've seen Crash! Just got it mixed up with another older movie with the same title (English I think but can't quite remember). In France, Crash was titled Collision. Yes, excellent excellent movie. One of the few best this year.

Is this the film that breaks into a musical about halfway through?

If you like foreign films, you can't go past films by the 1950's, 60's Japanese Director Akira Kurosawa. He has inspired many of the modern films we watch today, (eg, Star Wars Saga), and was a pioneer in his craft!

Another pretty cool film is a Hong Kong Chinese Movie, "Ifernal Affairs", (yes it is an 'F' in Infernal). I don't usually like the Chinese movies, because they tend to be badly acted and theatrical, but this one has a great story and is extremely well done! (Its actually a trilogy, but hard to find all three. This film is the second in the trilogy).

Someone mentioned Red Violin. Another great film that is severley underrated!

Go Peter Jackson, New Zealand!!!!

For those who can't stomach foreign films, Infernal Affairs, which was BTW excellent, is being remade in grand hollywood style with I believe Matt Damon as one of the leads. I can't remember the name of the remake though...Rotten Tomatoes has it somewhere....

Yup, Infernal Affairs was good! It was billed as a Chinese style Michael Mann but not sure it's really true. On that note, goodie nite!

Maaaat Daaaamon. ("Quote from "Team America, World Police")

He would do quite a good job, (like him in Bourne series). Hope the Ameriacns don't over do it like the usually do! I would say the original would be right down Michael Manns' alley!

(Whats BTW stand for?)

...then again, I will do anything to get the taste of "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" as far from my conscious memory as possible. I'm not normally a bully, but I had to punch myself in the stomach and take my lunch money for renting that PoS. [/quote]

LOL I felt the same way about that movie! Hubby and I got it on PPV a couple weeks ago.

I do like foreign films but I don't think could sit for 4 hours and watch one, nor do I have time lol. It'd take me 4 days to watch it!
