Just watched an awesome film. - DPChallenge Forums

I'll bump this in the morning, because I think many will miss it, but I had to share a film I just finished. My wife and I enjoy foreign films greatly and just finished Lagaan. Who would have thought that a four hour Indian film about cricket would rank among the best sports films I have ever seen? Well, it does. Highly, highly recommended for those who are not subtitle averse.

In DPC terms it's an 8.14 blue. :)

Four hour film? Four hour Indian film?? Four hour subtitled Indian film about sports??? The sport is Cricket????

It violates all my criteria for watching movies. I will pass.

...then again, I will do anything to get the taste of "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" as far from my conscious memory as possible. I'm not normally a bully, but I had to punch myself in the stomach and take my lunch money for renting that PoS.

Yeah I could watch 4 hours of a Indian cricket movie anytime but Rugby games are very hard too watch for me at the moment.

As far as League goes congratulations but I've got a feeling that will be short lived :)

Hitchhiker's was all right, although Marvin was too iPod-ish for me. Everyone realizes that the screenplay was written by Douglas Adams right?

The movie was never meant to be just like the book in the same way the book isn't supposed to be just like the original radio show.

He understood that the different mediums required different approaches.

"Lagaan" was amongst the top five for nominations in "best foreign film" category for oscars but never made it. Being an Indian I can understand it without any need for subtitles, but I still find it to be just above average movie (funny though). The best part is the music but I doubt it would be part of version available in west. Indian movies have lots of dance and music which is normally edited before presenting west version. Btw, its part of curriculum (something related to team work) also for one of the reputed business-schools in India.

I have not seen hitchhikers...but I wonder if someone can do justice to such story in just few hours of movie media.

another good Indian Film, the documentary "Born in Brothels." Well worth the rent (especially since it involves a photographer doing hunanitarian stuff.

Four hours sounds like a tough job. Subtitles are not a problem at all, actually I find it kind of funny why "you americans" find it distracting. I absolutely hate dubbed movies. Never seen any Bollywood yet, I think it's about the time.

Yes, Lagaan was a beautiful movie - everything was beautiful, the actors, scenery, colours, costume, dancing and music. But I thought the story lacked a bit of rhythm. If you're up for Indian or somewhat Indian movies, try:
- the trilogy of Fire, Earth and Water. Each stands on its own and can be watched without the others (subtitles if I remember well)
- Bride & Prejudice (less grandeur but fun romance) mixed American-Indian
- Kick it like Beckham (by the same director as Bride ... who's English of Indian origins) mainly in English and filmed in England. A lot of fun especially if you're a football/soccer fan
- Bandit Queen. (Tamil only and subtitled) This is based on a true story, an extremely tough one to watch with very violent lucid scenes. Definitely not recommended for kids or sensitive dispositions

Speeaaking of awesome films, I never go to see a movie twice, never. We saw a movie on Sunday that has us taking two other couples to see it again tomorrow night.

Funnily, it has Indian in the title. The Worlds Fastest Indian stars a truely brilliant Sir Anthony Hopkins in a beautiful story about a guy who tinkers in his garage with a 1920's Indian motorcycle and eventually takes it to Bonneville in 1967 and sets a world record that has still never been beaten. As the posters say Based on one hell of a true story

Ignore your pre-conceptions about the idea of that story not being the basis of a brilliant film, because it is. Ignore the pre-conception that this is a guy movie, because it isn't. Women are the predominant re-viewers.

It's funny, engaging, surprising, sensitive, uplifting and is guaranteed to leave you a little emotional. It was released in October and Oscars are being mentioned.
