I somehow like this photograph, please help me out in understanding the strengths and weaknesses of this capture. And let me know how best I could post-process it with Photoshop and/or any other tool.

Avijit, I took the liberty of trying a small amount of photoshop.
Basically with portraits the key is in the eyes. With your photo you have a great subject BUT your little boy in front of the girl is ALSO a great subject and is still too clear in the photo.
You need to seperate your main subject more from your foregraound and background. Most of the time you try to do this with your original photo but..as in the case of a lot of digital photos..getting great Depth of Field seperation is hard. And sometimes you just don't get it anyway.
You can address these issues in Photoshop (or some equal) by creating a seperate layer or layers and applying various filters like gaussian blurs, screens or multipliers etc.. Then you ERASE the effect around your subject and POW!!! your subject jumps of teh page!
With your photo I took it into Photoshop, added an adjustment layer..used guassian blur set at 5.6 pixels, erased the area around the young girl to "sharpen her image and set the layer opacity to 50%. Then I duplcated the blur layer and set that layer to a multiply layer to darken and saturate the colors.
Here is the result..which took about 5 minutes.

Even after hokie's efforts, the little boy still keeps drawing my attention away from the girl.

You can definitely do more to this photo. The stuff I did was to illustrate with a photo what is sometimes hard to say in words alone :-)
Plus, this just gets people motivated to squeeze more from their photos. There are a lot of great photos that get put up on this site every week that with about 15 minutes of Photoshop work (Trying different crops, some simple adjustment layers, etc, etc) could really pop off the screen.

O.K....
Had a few minutes between paperwork fun and did a second alternative to your photo question.
A more severe way to eliminate distracting elements is to simply crop them out.
This crop of the little girl photo is what I like to call the cover shot crop. We see it all the time on the cover of magazines and it leaves no doubt what the subject is.
Classic cover portrait crop, slightly off center face crop. Let the shoulders and the head turn tell you which way to lean on the crop. The idea is a subject should be aiming their shoulders into the shot.

I had one of my graphic design know-it-alls I work with tell me that I didn't leave room for the Magazine Title...Well excuUuuUUuuuuse me!

Nolock, I think its a beautiful shot as it is. I just gave it a sepia tone to keep the viewers eye from wandering over to the colors.

| Thank you all. It's been a fun discussing the photo. This photo was posted raw, without any editing in photoshop. Surprisingly, I couldn't see Scott's (hokie) photographs. It seems, they are no longer available, what's the problem? |
