Forgive me if I am wrong, But are we not supposed to be voting on the quality/composition or technical expertise in the Photo??.

It seems to me in this latest challenge (Industrial) people would rather comment on how well I title my Photo, rather than the subject being associated with the challenge title.
IMHO please don't comment on the title (if I wanted that I would have consulted my fifth grade english teacher!), tell me what I might be doing wrong or give some composition tips anything but your idea of what right and wrong in regards with my title...WHO CARES!.

-dpchallenge dudes - along side the "this comment was useful" checkbox, can we have perhaps some 360 degree feedback checkboxes?, (I won't give any of the suggestions I thought of cos I will probably offend)

This is a digital photography challenge site isn't it?... not a marketing competition!!

Next time lets not even give the photo a name. Err, can we do that?

Well. since this is your second challenge you are allowed a rant or two :-D

If you want to cruise at DP Challenge, go through the different past challenges, study the winners and duplicate them the best you can.

If you don't mind a little bit different route, do your own thing, (including obscure or over the head titles) or whatever turns you on. You will still learn at about the same rate either way by simply participating in the various forums, however, you might end up with slightly higher blood pressure if votes or funny comments get to you...heheh

I know how to shoot clean, well exposed photos with catchy titles, it's called advertising and I have to do that for a living. It's the offbeat or slightly obscure I need practice at :-/ And that's my deisire here. You gotta figure your desires out and don't let the noise get you down :-D

Title of the photograph is indeed a reflection of your creativity. As you title your piece of art, you often influence the viewer to understand your point of view. So when people judge your photograph, naturally your title would have some impact on it.

" You gotta figure your desires out and don't let the noise get you down :-D"
My desires are to take a photo that invokes emotion in the person viewing - comments don't get me down - they disapoint, someone has wasted my time and theirs commenting on something that only matters in the slightest. man I sound anal... it's more disbelief than anything else! lol.

"If you want to cruise at DP Challenge, go through the different past challenges, study the winners and duplicate them the best you can" - I would rather not copy someone elses style but create and evolve my own and not have heavy reliance on the title to articulate what the picture is about, there is alot of that in this site I have noticed!.

thanks for listening/forgiving etc!

I'm with Hokie here. I RETIRED from 25+ years of shooting what other people needed/wanted/demanded, and I'm damned if I'll do it now. So I make my lyrical titles and my often-obscure images because it pleases me. My "Cheater" image scored below 5.0, and has NINE FAVORITES :-) That's sweet, for me...

I hope you mean it!

Every photo web site has it's own personality. Remember, this is a popular public voting site, not a juried site. That is not bad or good...just what it is.

I have my local camera club and I work with photographers and artists every day where we talk about stuff but they are too stuck up on technique and gear. At DP Challenge I get a whole different view point and its fun. Scores and weird comments don't affect me, it's the possiblilty that I didn't squeeze all I could get from a photo moment that get's to me more :-D We all still learn a lot by just looking at our stuff versus what else is here and making our minds up what we would LIKE to do different.

OMG - I have just entered the latest challenge, I feel dirty, I have just contradicted myself totally, and even used the title to sway those who are voting.
("If you want to cruise at DP Challenge, go through the different past challenges, study the winners and duplicate them the best you can")<--- I have done just that! I am ashamed, I have catered for the masses, not gone for originality - oh well what can you do ;)

For those those who read my and replied to my rant, I am truely sorry!

In regards to your original rant, I do think you need to think about more than just the picture. It's like showing off your work to an art critic or ad exec, you want your portfolio of pic's to present well. For example, you would probably have complementary matting around your pictures to make them pop! For DPC, the title is part of your overall presentation. Hopefully a bad title would not bring down your score, but a real good one might help it!

Something else to think about is how the picture presents on these gray web pages. I noticed a number of wonderful snowy pictures in the Free Study that could have been greatly helped with a nice dark border, as some of the pictures got a little washed out with the gray page and lost some of their appeal (at least to me).

This is a competition - you gotta think about the whole package!

My 13 year old son joined yesterday because he really wanted to comment on an image in a challenge. He has been browsing images here for about 9 months and this is the first image that compelled him to join. What did it? The title. And, he thought about it for 2 days before he joined. He just had to comment.

Now, for me, having an image or its title compel someone to join just to comment is probably the highest form of flattery.

He is not a photographer - he doesn't comment on technicals because he feels he doesn't know them. But, he will now comment on what strikes him and, in this case, it was a title.

He has no real interest in photography so far but I do encourage him to express himself. Please don't discourage him by stating that his comment is valueless. In his heart, he was trying to tell the photographer that he loved his image.

Not everyone here is a photographer. Not everyone understands what they like or dislike in an image. Not everyone can critique technicals in an image. Just be glad they noticed it at all.

Very Interesting point, might explain a comment I recieved yesterday regarding contrast which I think is fine.

(p.s. mine isn't snowy)

What do you expect many here cant critique picture so therefore it is best for them to study the name of the picture for sam it is a big deal, for many technical stuff is really important and for most picture here have to be graphic not photographic to count, and for few who understand what classic photographic is about and publish best picture get only average score so if you want to take part here you have to cope whit all this.

My original rant was merely over the frustration of some of the comments aimed at a title rather than the picture, I am glad that people do notice my titles but when the subject matter and the link to the title is as blatant as I and many others think (bit of a DPC following at work), I get the feeling some voters may leave a comment before even thinking.

I consult someone before even contemplating leaving a comment just in case I am being unreasonable.(not that I would ever leave a harsh critism - not my style)

"Please don't discourage him by stating that his comment is valueless" - Sorry I didn't try and discourage anyone - me being new to this scene, I thought it was a bit odd that I should recieve comments about how I worded my title over the subject or how well the photo was taken, after recieving these replies in this forum and valid ones at that, I now know I have got it wrong and it is indeed the whole package and shall try to think about the title more.
but also please my intensions were very tongue in cheek - I wasn't writing to put off voters let alone the younger more impressionable audience. I apologise if I have offended.
