I am looking into getting an MP3 Player. I am fairly new to the MP3 world and am wondering what you guys think of your MP3 Players. I know that the IPOD is a hot item, but is it really worth the money? Can I get a cheaper model and get the same benifits?
One brand in particular I am looking at is the RCA Lyra. They have a RD2763 that comes with 5GB hard drive, screen display, and an FM Transmitter. The FM Transmitter piece is something I would buy whether I get this one or not, and this comes with it.
Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I was very anti-Apple before owning an iPod. I used to constantly say the iPod was overpriced and the Creative products were just as good and easier on the wallet... and then I broke down and tried a 4th gen iPod color. I'm not going back.
I purchased my first iPod in September and I already own another. My wife got the one I just bought and I picked up a brand new 30gig iPod video.
Prior to owning one I refused to buy into the hype. But after owning one it is without a doubt the best mp3 player I have owned... and i've owned 3 different brands prior to the iPod (4 total with the iPod).
Does it play all the crazy audio formats like ogg vorbis, etc.? No. But all I use are mp3s anyway.
Don't buy an mp3 player on a single feature such as a built in FM transmitter --- i've never been satisfied with ANY FM transmitter. The audio quality of every FM transmitter I have ever used sucks and I can't imagine a built in one is any better. |

I had my car stereo hard wired to accept an aux input cable, so now I can plug my iPod directly into the car system. FM transmitters have an almost universal bad reputation for quality and interference.
I've only owned iPods, so I can't speak to the competition, but we just purchased our 5th iPod (as a family) over Thanksgiving break. |

Thanks sage that's good to about the FM Transmitters. Do you listen to your MP3 Player in your car? What do you use to listen to it. Just wondering. Thanks

Just to add my $0.02.
The FM transmitters SUCK. I've had three of them and they all stopped working after a few weeks of providing staticky FM quality sound. My next car (or stereo if I get upset enough about it) will have an aux input for a MP3 player.
Right now I am using my Palm Pilot as an MP3 player. It's not an ideal solution, but it's workable for now.

Me too. I wasn't really 'anti' apple, I just didn't wanna pay the extra price for the iPod. I had two other inexpensive MP3 players before I bought the 20gb iPod. All I can say is that the iPod, for me, was worth the extra price. I love the simplicity of the user interface. Mine also doubles as photo storage when I occasionally fill up CF cards.

I bought an iPod adapter that plugs into the cd changer input on the back of my head unit in my car. The adapter plugs into the iPods docking station plug. So it charges the iPod while you play it through the head unit. A variety of options exist to do this.
As someone else pointed out, you can sometimes buy an adapter that plugs into your head unit via the cd changer input that provides a mini audio plug you can use to plug into any audio device. This, however, won't charge or provide power to an iPod.
Lots of new car audio head units are also starting to support iPod's and coming with built in support for plugging them in. |

I bought a Nomad Jukebox when they first came out years ago. I too resisted the iPod craze until the 3rd generation iPods came out and I'm never going back. I have an Alpine head unit in my car with the iPod interface so that I can control the iPod right from my stereo. It also charges the iPod.

Bought a stocking stuffer from CostCo called VR3 FM modulator that plugs right into a cigeretter lighter and comes with a plug to plug into a devices headphone jack, but that's not it; if you have a flash drive you can simply plug it into the USB slot and use the Random/shuffle, play, forward, rewind feature.
Also saw the product on Target but it was about $5.00 more. CostCo price was $24.99.
Use can simply buy one of those USB shell and insert a memory card and plug it into the device.

I have an iRiver which is lightweight (nice for taking on long runs), has a voice recorder (nice for taping lectures), an FM receiver (which you can record from), and a line in jack.
Less than $100 too.

| I had a Creative Jukebox Zen. I found the interface of both the player and the software to be bulky and not very user friendly and consequently did not use my player as often as I would have liked to. Got an ipod and love it to death. I use the Monster transmitter in the car (charges as it goes) and the XtremeMac AirPlay in the house and everywhere else. I am not an Apple lover of any sort but definitely love the ipod. |

I have the 5GB RCA Lyra RD2763, and have been very pleased with it so far. This is my second Lyra, after my refurbished RD2762A's battery began to die on me.
I got a brand-new RD2763 on Amazon.com for less than $50 (S/H was free!), and it comes with the FM transmitter you mentioned. It works good in my car, especially since the casette tape player in my car isn't working very well any more.
The earbuds that come with the player aren't great, so I got some JVC Gumy ones (Berry blue to match the blue player). Also, at my local Wal-Mart I found an "RCA Lyra Accessory Kit" with three silicon cases (blue, clear, and black) along with another battery charger for $3! There are very few Lyra accessories out there, so this was a great find. I use a Case Logic Pocket (small with the zipper) to carry the player around, and oh, yeah, it's blue, too...
I'd recommend the RD2763, but if you are willing and able to spend more (I wasn't), then I'd say get an iPod, but this Lyra is a great deal for the money. |

I had a few of the other brand mp3 players for a while. Got an iPod. Wouldn't go back.
I wired an AUX input in to my car stereo in place of the tape deck (old car :) ) and use my iPod all the time to listen to podcasts on my commute.
The FM transmitters are all terrible if you live anywhere moderately populated (i.e., with a lot of FM stations) They work quite well in the country though. |

I've had the exact same experience. My 30GB video iPod is awesome. |

DAMN! I hate when that happens.
Edit: wasn't there a site suggestion some time ago about adding some kind of indicator on a thread to indicate it's ancient? Maybe a different background colour to all the thread cells so it could be seen no matter how you're navigating to the thread. That'd be good. :/

| I can see the sporting spirit at work here though: see who can pick the oldest thread possible, drop a reply in and have it sail through as though it's as current as today's paper. Gotta love how boring we are. Threads as old as dirt are talking about the same stuff we regard as important today. |
