my boyfriend is going to australia and i wanted to make him a clever package of things for him to do on the plane ride. I'm a little stuck though, so far i have magazines, candy, and some nice earphones that block out outside sounds.

anymore suggestions?

lip balm, socks to wear to avoid DVT, a neck rest and blindfold, burn a CD of his favourite music or download ipod music for him.
Envelopes to open every 2 hours containing a message from you or a puzzle or a photo.

a pocket game like solitaire
a pack of cards
a really good book

(Guess who had done a lot of long haul flights!)

A few things that have made airplane travel bearable for me:

Travel yahtzee
Sudoku puzzles
Travel toothbrush and toothpaste (I don't know what it is, but I always feel so much better if every few hours I get up and stretch out, walk to the bathrooms and brush my teeth.)

cheese wiz
Ritz crackers
Bottle of Jack black label
nice comfy pillow.

If he has an MP3 player, get an external battery pack. There are aftermarket units that take AA batteries and plug in where the AC adapter goes.

Throw in a couple of paperbacks, magazines are too quick of a read for a long flight.

-plastic nalgene bottle with water (or wine! thugh you are not suppose to do bring booze on theplane I think)
-travel blanket and pillow, riponlady mentioned a neck rest since the airlines are getting stingy
-extra batteries if there is anything electronic
-pen if any forms need to be filled out (I see so many people asking for pens when they have to fill out customs forms on the plane)
-little travel bottle of ibuprofen or something in case of a headache
-little travel thingie of tissues
-gum (similar to the candy you've done)
-little packets of salt and pepper (maybe some hot sauce, too) to spice up your meals
-those little handy-wipe serviette things to wipe your hands
-ear plugs in case the headphones are to bulky to sleep with
- and as said, stuff to read and play (easy reading stuff I find is better, otherwise I get a headache)

Anyway...tell him not to sleep before he goes then he can sleep on the plain maybe? How long is the flight? My girlfriend went to china once for dance, and I think she said the plain ride was like 20 hours...that's a long time to be on a plane though...maybe he'll get a fever and just sleep the whole time :D

I don't like carrying books as well as all the other gear, so I always make sure I have a couple of new e-books on my PDA.

deep vein thrombosis
causes clots in your veins. Not fun stuff...

some socks help keep circulation going, but they say get up and walk around once every hour or so, especially if you are a senior citizen

Athletes and other people in good shape are at high risk as well.

Actually, make that a set of earphones (for his mp3 player) called "The Plug" by Koss - those things are amazing. They seem to push the sound deep into your ear and at the same time you hear very little of the world around you.

true

however, pulled from a website:
Who gets a DVT?

Certain factors make a DVT more likely to occur. They are more common in people aged over 40 and in people who are obese, or who have already had a DVT. Several inherited conditions make the blood more likely to clot than usual, increasing the risk. Other factors include:

* prolonged bed rest, (immobility)
* major injuries, or paralysis
* surgery, especially if it lasts more than 30 minutes, or involves the leg joints or pelvis
* cancer and its treatments, which can cause the blood to clot more easily
* long-distance travel, because of prolonged immobility. It is unclear whether or not air travel is more risky than other long journeys - for example by car or coach
* pregnancy and childbirth - related to hormone changes that make the blood clot more easily and because the fetus puts added pressure on the veins of the pelvis. There is also risk of injury to veins during delivery or a caesarean. The risk is at its highest just after childbirth
* taking a contraceptive pill that contains oestrogen. Most modern pills contain a low dose, which increases the risk by an amount that is acceptable for most women
* hormone replacement therapy (HRT). For many women, the benefits outweigh the increase in risk.
* other circulation or heart problem

In the case of athletes I think it was that their hearts usually don't need to beat as often, so they are more likely to develop clots when circulation is restricted. I guess that would fit into "other circulation or heart problem", even though normally good heart condition wouldn't be a problem.

I am booking a 28 hour flight from Munich to New Zealand tomorrow. I'll be travelling with my 5 yr old son. Wanted to do a stopover but either the price went through the roof, or we land at some time after midnight, and as I wanted to stay with family or friends that is a little late, so decided to go all the way in one shot. There are some good ideas in this thread. Might add this to my watch list so I can find it just before the flight. If he doesn't already have it, then get him one of those new apple ipods that can show video. They are so cheap you can buy two!! Then send the second one to me as I will need it. I would probably load it with childrens films.

One thing to check is what kind of plane you are one. If you are on one of the newer laong hual ones, you'll get more perks.

Often, on the long haul flights, you get those little things in the seat in front of you that lets you play games and watch movies. Only problem is the movies start and there is no indication of when.

If this is the case, you may not have to worry to much about bringing a gameboy or something because they usually have tetris and the like

wgoodey - Good to keep in mind as I haven't heard as much about that

DVDs if he's bringing a laptop. Otherwise, they have those dealies where you rent a DVD player in one airport and return it in another, I don't know if that works internationally. Maybe just buy one of those little DVD players...

DVT can affect anyone on a long haul, especially if you do fall asleep for upwards of 10 hours without moving. I tend to prefer to get up and move around and do a few exercises to keep the blood flowing but the socks are useful as a precaution. It is also advised to take a soluble asprin the day before and the day of flying to help (it thins the blood).
It does happen fairly rarely but unfortunately you do not know if it will be you until it happens. I had leg pains a week after a long haul flight and they shot me into hospital for tests just in case! Luckly it was OK but it gave me a fright.

asprin or other headache killer.
"airborn" medication to help prevent getting any colds or flus in the plane's air system.
