Hey Guys, has anybody ever been to a town called Laramie in Wyoming? Any good places for pictures, any cheap hotels, etc?? Thanks!

Hey! My brother lives there, and I did for one summer, 5 years ago.

Ummmmmmmmm... yeah. And sadly I don't remember that much about the town for hotels and photo ops.... Wyoming has some beautiful landscapes though, and the town itself is small enough that you should be able to easily wander around and find photo ops.

What's got you heading out that way?

Many, many years ago there used to be a tv programme, a western, called "Laramie" Always had a yearning to ride there - probably would have to fight my way through the traffic nowadays!!

Hey I was there yesterday! They have some really neat architectural (how do you spell that??) buildings, the university is there and some really nice old churches ive been wanting to take pic's of. As far as landscapes my husband recomends Veta Woo (pronounced veta Voo), not sure which way it is out of laramie, I think north. If you go out of town towards Centenial (snowy range hwy) there are some great mountains, I think the pass is closed for the winter though so you can go all the way through. Laramie itself is pretty flat but there is mountains and hills all around it. I would see Veta Woo or the snowy range Hwy.

I lived in Laramie for one year, this was about 13 years ago. I loved it. Unfortunately any info I may have had is probably outdated.

Excellent photo ops everywhere around there though!

... and don't mind the wind, it'll stop - some day. :)

I love Laramie. My oldest son lives there, and I have a bunch of friends there. I've only once stayed at the Holiday Inn right off I-90 (usually I stay with my son), and it's comfortable and clean.

One of my favourite places to just wander around is Vedauvoo, between Laramie and Cheyenne, about 20 minutes out of town to the East. That's if you like to wander around in rocky places I guess.

In town, I like to wander around downtown, through the alleys, and there's a bridge that goes over a whole ton of train tracks where there's all sorts of photo-ops (if you like train tracks and stuff like that). Laramie's not that big of a town, and I guess compared to many fancier towns it's really not that much to brag about, but it's a cool place IMO. The University of Wyoming is there. They had the first college football game under artificial lights there.

Thinking back - being a geologist I was drawn the the land. Just north of Laramie is where all the dinosaur fossils have been found. I found one dino footprint up there - kind of cool. I gave it to my nephew for a christmas present.

If you need a geo-guide please don't hesitate in asking. I don't charge much :)

Lived in Laramie for a year. Just about everywhere in the area is affordable compared to most peoples standards. Enjoy it. :)Great Photo-ops all over town, but watch out for students after dark. They're kinda clutsy as there's a fairly high number of bars per capita. Great town though, HIGHLY reccomend The Library/Odwyers restraunt on Grand.

Are you sure it was the Holiday Inn? I just checked out their site and it's not listed... HERE

The holiday inn's name changed as it was bought out if I remmeber correctly. I think what used to be the holiday inn is now a comfort inn, not 100% sure, but I seem to remember that being a conversation I had while I was there.

If you have suitable transportation you should try and get over to Jackson and see the Tetons.

I'm pretty sure it was the Holiday Inn, it was in February of last year. Or at least it used to be the Holiday Inn, maybe it's something else now. It's right off the highway, and they can give you a ride from the airport (in a pickup) if you don't have a rental. I had a rental, but this guy from out east was coming in and got his luggage thrown into the back of the truck and he looked rather scared about the whole thing. It was sort of funny.

Added: It's this one: holiday inn laramie but the palm tree is not part of it :)))

Actually, the funniest thing about the motel was their telephone system. When my husband called, he got the recorded message, and then the girl says, "For front desk, press 1" and my husband waits, and waits (you know, usually there are other choices), but no, it was "1", that was the choice.

I visited my brother in Laramie a couple months ago. Can't say anything about hotels, but there are some good photo ops. The aforementioned Vedauwoo is on the interstate to the east between Laramie and Cheyenne. I have some photos here:

Vedauwoo

On the other side of the interstate from Vedauwoo is the Ames Monument, a pyramid built by a rail baron.

Happy Jack Road runs from Vedauwoo to Cheyenne and has some more rock formations.

The road up into the Snowy Range will probably be closed this time of year.

If you take highway 287 south towards Fort Collins there is quite a bit of interesting terrain just past the Colorado line. Also the dirt roads west of 287 just south of Laramie have some neat rock formations, including one called Chimney Rock. Plus you will likely get some good prairie views and probably some antelope. You should get a DeLorme's atlas or something similar to find your way around those dirt roads.

All in all, though, this is probably not the ideal time of year to visit Laramie. It will be cold and/or windy.

Take your camera on a weekend road trip up to Little Bighorn in Montana; and then over to Deadwood in South Dakota.

i hate Vedauwoo, once i got lost there for 3 hours... i guess if i was lost for another week or so i could have made a killing with an arrangement with the tv show "i shouldnt be alive"...
