well, obviously there's no competition. Basically, i'm deciding whether it is worth for me to spend the extra couple hundred for the 20D (I have the money to afford both - or maybe nikon D70?). So what do you guys think? - Of course, after that is the question of lenses....(what are the most critical, yet reasonably priced ones?) I shoot generally everything: people, scenery, animals, ect.

In my understanding, the main advantages of the 20D over the XT are that is more durable and has more FPS.

There are some excellent discussions in other threads on the site here's the first one I can remember links to another discussion also:

From all my research and I went to Wolf and handled both cameras I have decided to go with the 20D the XT really does feel smaller and not as sturdy as the 20D (besides the advanced features of the 20D).

If you plan to shoot sports I would recomment the 20D. 20D is a larger camera and easier to hold if you have large hands compared to the smaller 350 XT.

You might want to wait a bit for the 20D replacement. Rumours say, that it'll be released during february. It's a bit of a wait, but the price of the 20D should at least go down a bit.

Then again. I don't see much Canon can upgrade without jeopardizing other products. Maybe it will be a 20Dn. We'll see.

20D seems to have better autofocus also.

well d70 is great too, the 20d is a better camera cant argue that, but the d70 produces great images and just feels a lot better than the XT to a lot of people, it just has more substance. just try em out.

My advice for all its limited worth: Read all the reviews and opinions and then go down to a camera store where you can pick up, touch, feel, look through and maybe snap a few shots and evaluate the ergonomics - then factor that and you'll likely weigh heavily on the one that just feels right.

Good luck. :)

Good advice. I think the Nikons feel better in my hand. I think the D70s feels better in my hand than the 20D or the XT. I think imaging wise, the XT and 20D are same and better than the D70s. The 20D has more features including a better focusing system. The XT feels the cheapest, but I don't mind it now, it's my second body with a grip. Oh choices choices.

yep I did alot and alot of reading and reviews plus I got to use the rebel xt for a few days, then I made the choice to buy it. Using other slr's and then reading reviews, most importantly just using it or just taking a couple of shots with it and then comparing it, and also user reviews that made my decide which was important in my decision

Since you asked about lenses, let me try and answer that.
Ask yourself...what kind of shooting do you do or will you do? that will help narrow it down a bit.
Do you need canon lenses for some purpose (ego?) or will third party work?

Skip the kit lens, as you can afford better.
Options...assuming you want sharp, good focusing lenses priced shy of a grand or more...

Canon:
17-85 IS USM. Good walkaround lens, has IS, $600, can do macro
50mm 1.8 - for $75 get it.

Sigma:
18-50 2.8 EX DC - sharp, wide, fast, $500
70-300 4-5.6 APO Super Macro (MUST be the APO) $220. Best value out there in a telephoto, quite sharp with very good contrast.

Tamron:
28-75 2.8 - another fast lens good for walkaround, but not as wide as the Sigma $380ish
SP 24-135 - this is a great lens, sharp, contrasty and quick to focus. Great walkaround lens - covers more range than the other walkaround options, does macro also. $400

there are rebates on the Tamron lenses, takes about 3 weeks to get the money back - fast!

Macro lens - any brand in the 90-105 range will work just fine.
super wide angle..three choices: sigma 12-24 at $700, canon 10-22 at $700 or Tamron 11-18 for $570. I have not read reviews on all of them, but the canaon is slightly wider and faster, the tamron the least expensive and shortest range...

If you got a bigger budget, a 70-200 4l (canon) or 2.8 (sigma or canon) are all good choices. 2.8 is great, but heavier and mo money.

If you dont have any Canon gear then take a close look at this

Great reviews, excellent price

Also look at the Fuji S9500

The XT feels is pretty small and to me does not feel right. Having said that lots of people swear by it. If you are set on a Canon then go for the 20D
