I really want to get a good quality macro lens for my D70, does anyone have suggestions.

I have the same problem ...
I can't make up my mind between the

Sigma 105mm Macro f/2.8 for Nikon
or
Nikon Macro 60mm f/2.8

I guess these are the two best choices, the Sigma is cheaper
but the Nikon might be better ? I'm not sure but well now your choice is narrowed to 2 lenses, you do the final choice :)

Well, I'll tell you what I'm about to get, when I get my D50 next month, and that's the Sigma 105, (as well as the Nikon 18-70). I have researched this issue about as long and as hard as I can, and I feel very happy about my decision, to get the Sigma 105.
That's what I'd get, Neurowork.

I have a D70 with the Nikon 60mm Macro you speak of. I like it. It has many good qualities and I have nothing negative to say about it.

One feature I like (I'm not sure if it is available on the Sigma) is that it as a "limit" switch. This switch puts a "lock" on how close or how far you want the autofocus to focus on. Example:

If you are shooting Macro in AF mode and you are going for different angles...when you refocus, the lens will stay within a "short focus range"...it won't go thru the entire 1:1 to infinity range. This helps to get quicker shots.

I hope this made sense.

Also...check my portfolio, I have been shooting Macro for a few months with the Nikon 60mm and have some decent shots to show.

Here is one I'll show off!

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

KenSkid

I would also look at the Nikon 105mm Micro. It is about $170 more than the Sigma with rebate right now but comes with the five year Nikon warrantee. This is a highly rated lens.

Yes, the Sigma lens has that switch.
By the way, that lens is probably the best one I own. I LOVE it!

You could buy an old manual focaus macro lens. Sense you don't really need auto focus for macro stuff. Save momney, and get great glass.

Check out the Tamron 90mm Di I absolutely love mine. (just check the name under most of the photos on that page...)

Tack sharp, limit switch, good bokeh, great dof, easy to switch between MF and AF (Brent's right to say you want mostly manual for macro) and makes a wonderful portrait lens...

may want to check out November issue of Popular Photography.
They reviewed the new Tokina 100mm macro and wonder who would pay more for a Canon or a Nikon version.

this months shutterbug has a review of the Tokina 100mm 2.8 Macro and they say very good things about it. It has the focus limit switch and a rebate.
