I just went and bought my precious today, I got the 5D with grip and I bougt a exposure meter to, a cheap one, but will have to do.. the Visatec FM2000, anyone who knows if it's any good ?
the 5D is great, took my 17-40L, a fully charged battery and a 1GB cf card to the store so I could play right away :)
took a few shots wide open, and now the phrase "seeing the whole picture" has a whole new meaning, I just went WOW, when I saw how wide it really is :)
and the store took the 20D+grip of my hands for $1209 so I'm pretty happy now..
the only thing that I was not happy about was that the 24-105L was out of stock, I was going to get that to..
any reccomendation for another walkabout lens in that range ? less than $1000 ? |

Tamron 28-75mm is exceptionally nice and very attractively priced, but it's not especially long on a full-frame sensor...
Time to change the default camera in your profile, Dan...

I have heard that the 5D is unforgiving on the cheaper range on lenses. The experts suggest only L lenses will do. Apparentely!! :-)

I bought the 20D from B&H for $1499 11 months ago, and sold it to BECO in Iceland for $1209. but market value here is $1950 for a used 20D with grip
the 5D costs $5000 with grip here in Iceland, but it's worth the extra cost to get 2 years full warranty + excellent service from the store and 15% discount on accessories. |

i have a canon 28-135 IS usm... its not an L lens but it does have a macro focus and a wide zoom range. My fav. lens for walking around. The image quality is good with the 10d.

I've never really understood the explicit advantage of the rest of Canon's line over the 300D/350XT. Not for 3-5x the price.
Who buys for the following reasons?
1) Full frame sensor. Seems like it would be a benefit in wide angle, but is it a benefit otherwise? Not for zoom.
2) Megapixels. Increased, but how many people are blowing up past 16x24? The XT can reach this without a sweat.
3) FPS. I can understand this one for certain people. But seems like a minority who are dedicated action photographers.
Everytime I get the urge to look at a better body and search them out, I look at the price and think, "hell, I'd like my 300D plus $3000 in lenses instead."
Can someone shed some light for me? |

The 24-105L IS lenses are mostly out of stock right now because they were recalled due to excessive flare. It may be a little bit before the updated/less flaring versions show up.
As for the FF sensors being hard on lenses that's true. Even the 17-35L lens that Phil tested in DP Review showed CA, so I don't think just buying an L lens will solve that.
If you look at photozone.de, the 24-70L has a fair amount of CA, the Tamron has a bit less, but not much less. They don't have the Sigma's 24-60, so can't say much about that lens.
My personal feeling is that if you take any of the current 20's-70's range zoom lens and shoot high contrast shot (leaves against a sunny sky), you'll get noticable CA with all of them.

Hi Tim,
I think its because there is no "crop" factor involved with these cameras. As a result, you are using all of the lens to get the shot, not just the inner "sweet-spot" where everything is the best that it can be.
When I look at that way, it makes perfect sense that an excellent looking lens on a 1.6 crop sensor could look so-so to just plain bad on a FF sensor. The centers my still look ok, but edge performance will be hurtin'.

I'm currently on holiday in Florida and whilst we were in a Ritz Cameras store buying a few bits a couple from Iceland were looking at the 5D. It struck me as a little strange that they were considering this camera and yet, from their questions, knew little about it but it became clear when we chatted and they explained that they were from Iceland and buying it for a friend there... apparently it's retailing for 5 times the price over there as it is in the US?!!
Can that be true?

Not sure about five times as much, but I think stuff is very expensive in Iceland. Halifax International Airport used to get flights from Iceland. Some passengers would arrive with suitcases packed inside suitcases so they could buy more stuff while in Canada. Iceland is a very beautiful country, but from what I understand, the cost of living is quite high.

Well, plenty of things are extremely expensive in Iceland but the 5D isn't really one of those things. The price here is around $4600 but one has to keep in mind that this includes a 24.5% VAT which one is supposed to pay anyway when importing the camera by oneself. So, excluding the VAT the price is $3750 which is only few hundred dollars more expense than B&H and this includes an excellent 2 year local warranty service. So unless one intends to smuggle the camera to Iceland it isn't worthwile to purchase it from abroad.
However, many other products from Canon are extremely expensive here locally such as the 17-40mm L and 24-70mm L lenses so most people here order them from B&H or Adorama. |

They were also buying at least one L glass lens including the 17-40 I believe...

Where did you hear about that? Are they recalling from purchasers or just dealer's stock? I wonder if the current ones can be fixed or will a new model (Mk II?) take it's place?
