If you are a MAC OS user, could you please visit this gallery on my web site and tell me if you can view the photos in it? The photos are embedded in a SimpleViewer flash file that requires Flash version 6 or greater.

A friend has told me that he cannot see the photos, but is prompted instead to perform the flash upgrade, even though he is running version 8 on his MAC OS 10.x system.

Thank you for your help.
Linda

P.S. Thanks everyone for your help. After receiving some conflicting responses from people who use the same browsers and operating system, and due to a lack of expertise and time, I have decided to eliminate the Flash functionality from my web site and revert to the old basic "click through" navigation process. I am updating my galleries as time permits, and have already replaced the gallery used in this thread. Thanks for visiting my web site. I hope you enjoyed your visit (except for any problems you may have experienced, of course).

Linda

Well I'm running on WinXP and have Flash 8.0.22.0 installed

Your site works fine in IE, but in Firefox I get prompted to install the latest version of Flash (other flash sites work fine in Firefox on this PC)

Thank you jhonan.

After I posted my question, I went to the site where I got the SimpleViewer code from (why didn't I think of that before?), and found an update for the flash detection script file. Apparently SimpleViewer did not previously work with Flash 8. I replaced the flash detection script file in the gallery folder on my web site.

Would you mind trying again?

hmm... no, it's still giving me the same error in Firefox (I've cleared cache etc. but still the same thing)

"SimpleViewer requires the Flash Player."

Oh darn. Thanks for trying.
What version of Firefox are you using?

Using MacOS 10.3.9 and Safari. For a while it was taking literally minutes to load each image, but it sped up just now (I'm on T1 line, so it's unlikely the problem is on my end).

As for SimpleViewer, I saw no signs of it. Just regular static thumbnails and images. But SimpeViewer works fine on my Mac (using whatever version of Flash comes default with 10.3.9), I've seen it many times on other sites.

Using OS 10.4.3 and Safari 2.0.2 - no problems for me that I can tell.

Hmmm - interesting result you received, and I'm curious as to what the static thumbnails/images result looks like to you. Would you mind posting a screen capture?

I've sent an e-mail query to the SimpleViewer vendor about the Firefox issue. I'll follow that up by asking how the revision to support Flash 8 was implemented.

Thanks elemess - just saw your response and am glad you had no problems.

Now I'm seeing SimpleViewer in all the galleries other than Animals and Birds.

But I'm only seeing one thumbnail at the time in each gallery, other than Water, that one has the usual SimpleViewer table of thumbnails.

What you are seeing is correct. I replaced the Animals + Birds gallery last night with a straight HTML version to help my friend see my photos. For the other galleries, one thumbnail at a time is the way I designed it because of the space restriction on my page design. The Water gallery with the multiple columns and rows of thumbnails was my most recent attempt at getting the layout the way I wanted it to appear.

Safari 2.0.2
Firefox 1.5
Netscape 7.2
Explorer 5.2.3

on Mac OS 10.4.3: I'm prompted to download FlashPlayer in all of the (above) browsers, although FlashPlayer 8 is installed.

Interesting.... this directly conflicts with the responses received from elemess and scalvert regarding Safari 2.02! Anyone have any ideas on why?

Okay, here's another clue for you.

I've gone to the simpleviewer website, and viewed their demo gallery and it works fine in Firefox;

//www.airtightinteractive.com/photos/

So, this eliminates a problem with a) simpleviewer and b) firefox.

It indicates there may be a problem with the way you've configured simpleviewer on your website. What version of simpleviewer are you using? 1.7?

Okay, I think I know what the problem is.

In your HTML you're calling a function to detect the flash version;

I've looked at the flash_detect.js, and I'm not convinced it will work properly for all combinations of browser/os - It seems out of date.

Get rid of that check for flash, and let the browser handle it. If flash isn't installed, or it's the wrong version, the user will get prompted anyway. No need to do the checking yourself.

Thanks for looking at this code. Looking at the path to the .js file, I realized that I had forgotten to replace this occurrence of the file with the new one I downloaded today from the FAQ page on the SimpleViewer web site. It has also identified a need for me to go in and clean up my HTML coding for the index page in each of my galleries. By copying and pasting HTML files that I had used to generate previous galleries, the path is changed by my HTML editor to the last used path.

That flash_detect.js file may be out of date for the reason described above. Removing the "check for flash" code seems like a good idea, and I will give that a try.

Do you know how I can remove the flash plugin from my browser so I can test this properly - in both Windows 98 and Windows XP (IE 6.x)?

Hmm... looks like there isn't an easy way, try this;

Standard 10.4.3 install, latest Safari, etc., works fine for me.

I removed that flash detection code, then tested on Windows 98 and Windows XP with Internet Explorer, and in both cases, I didn't like the way it was handled. In Win XP, I almost overlooked the warning. On Windows 98, I just got a blank space where the gallery was supposed to appear. Netscape Navigator (a very old version) also produced undesirable results. So - deleting the flash detection code is not a viable solution IMHO.
