Welcome to the Freeman Patterson Photo Impressionism Study Group. Your first task is to try to say that 10 times quickly. It's not much easier to type (and I almost ran out of allowed characters). Fortunately, we'll just use this thread over and over.

The people who have signed up to be in this group (so far) are:

Clara (blemt)
Gordon
Ursula
Alan (AJAger)
Neil (nshapiro)
Colette (Cpanaioti)

I know several other people were interested in joining our other group, and emailed me, but did not sign up at the end of our other thread. We will continue to let people join through this next week, but you will need to pick up the Freeman Patterson book "Photo Impressionism" pretty quickly, because we are about to begin.

If anyone has ideas to "challenge" us while reading any chapter, jump in and propose it here. I will start by offering a very straightforward assignment.

Assignment 1. Read the first chapter, through page 25, and try producing some examples of each of the two types of multiple exposure described.

I think people agreed in the other thread to continue doing this via the blog approach, and to use this thread to discuss with the group. So if you don't have your blog yet (and you can start a new one remember too, for this book), get to it!

If you are on the list, please leave a note letting us know you've seen this and marked the thread as watch or email. That will serve two purposes, 1) it will let us know you've seen it, and 2) it will keep the thread active until everyone has!

I've been reading the book. I am trying to figure out how to apply the concepts to digital.

I would like to get in on this study group also. I don't have the book and I'm going to try to obtain one as soon as possible. I doubt I'll be able to get it locally, so I'll probalby have to order it.

I have marked this thread as watched...

I got the book ordered but it may be as late as next friday until it arrives. Don't let me hold up the group though. I'll play catchup when the book gets here.

If anyone would like to photograph the first chapter of the book for me to use until mine arrive, I would be in debt to you :)

I'm here! Sorry, I managed to sprain my knee last week and I'm kitten sitting this weekend. So I was a tad distracted. :) I'll be setting up my blog tonight.

John, I didn't see that you were in the group from the previous thread, but you are welcome to join! Since we are going to do this in Blogs again, we just need a stable list of people within a week so we can do a set of cross-links for our blogs to make it easier to go through the set.

If you haven't got one already, you can set up on blogger for free, and they even include hosting space for the photos.

As far as getting started, we'll start once everyone checks in. We will probably take the first chapter slowly anyway, because it's going to allow for a lot of experimentation!

Thanks :)

I have my blog setup and I'll post a link to it as soon as my DNS updates...

I'm here, I've seen it, I'm awake, I've got the book, I'm still waiting for the photographic talent that I ordered from Amazon to arrive in the post.

Great to hear that it's underway.

OK...I would like to get in on this.

I'm in the same boat as John, I don't have the book yet. I'm going to Barnes and Noble right now to see if they have it or I will have to order it.

You could be shooting, instead of typing ;^)

My local barnes and noble has a cruddy selection of photography books. They have a LOT of books but they are mainly pictorials. The instructional books include about 500 Hedgecoe selections, some 'dummies' books, and a bunch of other stuff that is mostly useless.

I am shooting! It just happens to be kitten pictures. Hmmm, I should see if I can do an impressionistic kitten before I have a wet nose on my lens...

We will put together a list that everyone can paste into their link area. We just need everyone to post a link to their blog, as they join in.

Hokie, welcome aboard.

Just posted another discussion on an impressionistic image from Big Bend. I'll stop now ;)

Okay, I lied. I read the first 15 or so pages of the FP book and started trying to work out how to do digital multiple exposures. I've had some success and posted about it on my blog.

Really is enough for one day though. Lots of ideas still to look at - any suggestions, thoughts or help would be really appreciated, particularly if you've already worked out a good way to do this - feel free to post comments on my blog!

Got a bit of work on multiple exposures done today, just a start, just two pictures. They're posted to my blog.

This is going to be quite interesting.

I have a question for everyone here:

Gordon mentions in his 5 exposures Sotol picture that he blended at an opacity percentage proportional to the number of shots being sandwiched. I used a similar method, although I used the decreasing ratio rather than the fixed ratio.

The question concerns the background layer (the bottom layer). Background layer opacity will be 100%. If the background layer is also one of the pictures, it will show through clearer than all the rest of the pictures. That doesn't seem quite right as far as multiple-exposures goes.

I have been experimenting with having a plain black or white background (no picture background), but I'm not satisfied with the results.

Any ideas?
