Which is the better flash, and why?

Was this a typo? Do you really mean 550EX?

On the basis that the answer to the latter is 'yes':

it is said that the Sigma has about the same feature set as the Canon, although the Sigma is slightly less powerful, has a less intuitive interface and is built less sturdily. The Sigma, however, costs a lot less than the Canon.

Right, I see that there is, indeed, a 220EX and you actually mentioned the Sigma 500 DG ST, not the Super. Sorry about that.

The Sigma would be more powerful than a 220EX, but as far as features go, I'm completely lost and only helping to confuse the issue.

Wasn't a typo. At B&H the 220EX is $120, while the Sigma 500DG is $145. I was trying to figure out if the extra $25 for the sigma is worth it.

I believe that the 220EX has a guide number of 22, whereas the Sigma has a guide number of 50. Quite a difference in output.

I would opt for the Super DG. I have one and I have to say, it's great :)

I own the EF-500 DG Super and the 420EX. I perfer the Sigma to the speedlite, because of the power and extra features. Plus the Sigma will the tilt and swivel head which the 220ex will not have.

I just got my 220EX in todays mail. Haven't tried it yet but am looking forward to it. All I've had so far is the flash on the camera.
