What is it with hideous borders in the country challenge?
Please take an objective look at your photo and border... there are some photos here that would have been pretty good without their border. It WILL cost you votes!
Culprits: transparent borders, gradient borders, thick coloured borders, borders with triangles in corners, borders with text, etc, etc

You must love my shot then... it has no border. :) I would agree that most of the time I don't think borders enhance the picture, although I've seen a small number of shots where I think the border was an asset to the shot. It's pretty rare however in my opinion.

Borders with text are illegal.

I have noticed a small glitch with my photo. It seems like one line of pixels at the bottom of the photo doesn't open. This makes the border apear skewed. I don't know if it only does this when I open it, or if it is displayed wrong on the site. It would be a pity to lose votes due to some technical glitch. (and yes I checked, re-checked and then double checked that the original which I uploaded was ok)

hideous? a litte harsh, Bob. I agree some borders can be distracting, and you're free to vote as you wish. but hideous?

Yep, hideous!
There have been some beautifully done photos that I just can't look at without going 'that border is hideous!'.
I do try to ignore it though and take off as few points as I can, but it's a shame.

I'm with Bob - there has been the occaisional hideous border. I don't deduct many points, but I usually mention it in the comment. I think sometimes people add a fancy border for the sake of adding one, not because it does anything to enhance the image.

Having said that I have seen one or two borders which truly make the shot. So I'm not suggesting that borders are a bad concept - simply that sometimes the execution is bad.

I know I'll just be going with a simple border on the outside of the pictures from now on, after messing up mine on my portrait shot. lol.

Plus I find simple is better. I don't really pay much attention to the borders though, as it is all about the photo inside of it. =)

Twocentz... I thought your border was great (apart from the uneven distance). It really enhanced your photo. I do think a good border can subconsciously add to a good photo. And great photo, congrats on the ribbon!

Thank you, and also thanks for adding it to your favourites. Much appreciated :)

I tend to use just a thin black border.
Or something subtle like this.
06/25/2003 07:50:52 AM · #11
Praise to the Lobster - And I thought it was only me who had a great hatred for the "Hideous" border.

I am very sorry, twocentz, but in my opinion your border runied your picture. It's actualy not even a border, it's a distracting black line floating around towards the edges of the photograph.

This is only my opinion, and obviously I am in the minority as you scored very well (big congrats on that!!!)

I am not anti-borders. I think a nice balck or white frame can add so much to an image. But people who get creative on their border, seldom have been creative in their photography.

It's also unprofessional if your sending work to be proofed. But that doesn't apply to the challenges.

Twocentz, I think your border is tastful and well done. Many great, award-winning (I guess this includes you now) photogs on this site have done something very similar and have been praised for it. I hope the "border haters" will still judge photographs on their technical merit and creativity and not let the "hideous" borders dictate their vote. : )

Well, I really hate to say it, and I wil probably be flamed liek a cow steak, but I will mark down if a users has stuck an awfull border around a photograph.

I am not a border hater, I use borders in most my images. But having text - swirtly lines - faded - transparent borders I don't like.

Again using Twocentz as an example, her "lines" are not even border. A border goes around teh outer edge of something. What she has done is put a black line in her picture. This is photoshop editing, not border creation.

That is simply your opinion which, luckily, was not shared by the VAST majority of voters on the site. Personally, I thought that borber was pretty good and actually added to the image's impact for me.

The respect to the Lobster - he DID mark my photo down for the border, but not much. Very fair in my opinion. Though I disagree with his opinion on my border, the treatment was fair.

I have 6 comments so far:
1 - Disliked it immensely - Bob :)
1 - wasn't sure it was the right one for the pic, but had nothing unkind to say otherwise
3 - said there was nothing I could do to improve the photo (that good or that bad? :)
1 - didn't mention it.

no idea what that means.

BTW, the rest of Lobsters comment was very appropriate and kind, so thanks for that Bob.

No probs pedro,
unlike Jonpink's critique of my photo today, which tore it to shreds! He's sure not holding back today!
I'm taking it as constructive criticism though, even though I disagree with him!

Pedro, you showed great skill with your border ;) hehe.

Not too thick - not too thin - and most importantly - it is to the edge (as opposed to floating like some)

Loved the pic by the way - only reason I gave 9 instead of 10 was that skin looks kind of death like. Was that by design?

lol. you bad bad man!

My comments on borders. I agree, mostly, that simple borders are best. In fact, when submitting to DPC, which I believe is supposed to represent somewhat of the experience of going through a real photography contest, be it a judged exibition or submitting images for stock, I think it would be best not to include borders at all or maybe just have a program that writes a simple even white border around each image. On the other hand, borders are very important in the print industry. I know this is not a "market" evaluation site, nor a photoshop contest, but it is important to understand that what you are calling hideous borders have real life uses and publications, etc. in which they are standard and encouraged. Feathered bordered, for instance, are quite popular with portrait shots. This is not to say that the photographer themselves find them appealing; more likely they hate it but the clients love them. Having a feathered border adds to the soft feeling in a portrait shot and having that extra impact that makes the picture look like something special and not just another image. Keep in mind that the image itself is more important to the photographer, and it should be, but creative borders that add to the image can be a big selling point. As for what you are calling "floating borders" or "black lines that aren't even technically borders"; these are very popular borders nowdays. Some people seem very annoyed by them. In general, I think it gives the image a modern yet professional look. I think it's a pleasant merging of a full bleed image and a strong frame for the eye and it's very effective. I can see how it would be hated by purists, but rest assured it has a lot of popularity as well. I've used the technique before, especially for graphic design layouts for brochures where you want a clear border to the page but also need the images to run fully to the edge of the page. It isn't as useful, but it looks good to me. Still, I wouldn't suggest it for DPC. In short, this site is about photography and I don't let the borders affect my opinion of the photo. I'll give a bonus point to a really creative border that I think also works well mainly because I know those submissions are going to get voted down by you border haters. To each their own...

my fatal flaw - I desaturated all of the colours except blue and yellow. it made me look pasty, which I'm not. too bad - lots of people suggested a tanning bed. :) my score sucked, and I'll blame that. (because i have to blame something)

very good pax. Orange and blue are complimentary colors; too bad the orange is more yellow. Hideous, yes, in a way, but effective and I can see this being done for a reason and I appreciate it.

Martus - Do you use even numbers of pixels for your borders? If you use uneven numbers that can cause skewed looking borders. (something I learned through trial and error).

:)

I've found that nothing is more effective at setting off a picture as a simple single or bicolor border, of the type that the original rule allowed. I've tried several other things, but they always end up giving it the wrong effect, especially when displayed in the context of this website (because the site itself is composed of all single-color blocks, which sets of pictures rather elegantly but doesn't complement fancy borders too well).

Just my .

heh.
