I'm trying to work out which pictures to enter for the National Geographic contest - got it down to 8 options and would love to hear your thoughts
(They are all rubbish, don't enter - is a valid thought :))

last 8 here

Thanks!

(I can enter up to 4 shots)

the "Yarra River, Melbourne, Australia" one.
That's like THE coolest skyline photo i've ever seen!!! WOW!
I also really like the one with all of the flower pots. i would enter one of those 2. but that's just me

My choices as best are -

1. Yarra River, Melbourne, Australia
2. Drake Bridge, Austin, Texas

I feel both of these images are very strong images.

I love and have always admired Bellagio Fountains, Las Vegas.
It really is 100% winner for me.

p.s. Good luck.

Fountains and the melbourne ribbon shot are my 2 finalists Gordon. Best of luck choosing. I like all 4 of the top ones though.

IMO the top three are:

1 - Bellagio
2 - Drake Bridge
3 - Playa del Carmen

The 4th is too close to call, and for some reason Yarra River doesn't do anything for me.

1. Melbourne
2. Playa Del Carmen
3. Bellagio
4. Banff

Gordon,

They are stunning shots and being a Melbourne resident I'm partial to you shot of the Yarra (and also keen to try a similar shot myself when the weather improves). Reading the description of the challenge though I would say Drake Bridge includes people and shows the "essence" of that area better than the Melbourne shot, which is striking but doesn't "represent" the location as well.

My order would be:
* Drake Bridge
* Bellagio Fountains
* Yarra River
* Playa del Carmen Beach
* Tulum Beach
* Las Vegas
* Banff
* San Diego

Certainly the first three are worth entering and possibly fourth and fifth (I realise that's one too many). Of course all 8 are better than anything I've ever shot - you must have awe-inspiring photo albums at home.

Gordon, all are beautiful, but my favourites are Drake Bridge and Tulum Beach. Next two would be Bellagio Fountains and Banff.

One question though - I was looking at the NG contest site, and I understood that you needed to send slides. I thought these (your picts) were digital images. Can they be converted to slides, or am I missing something entirely here? TIA,

Ursula

The rules say you can enter unmodified digital prints. That already knocked out a fair number of shots that I have where I've tidied things up, but these 8 are all pretty much faithful to what was recorded in the camera.

They are all very good but if picks have to be made my choices would be

1 Bellogio Fountains
2 Yarra River
3 Banff
4 Playa del Carmen Beach

Good luck with the contest

Definitely the Drake Bridge shot, and Bellagio, San Diego and Vegas.

Drake Bridge. It's unusual. The others are nice - great shots, but not especially novel, in my opinion.

Hi Gordon, the shots I like are:
W Hotel
Yarra River
Drake Bridge
Bellagio Falls

Good Luck!

another vote for the Drake Bridge shot - though i'd want to do something about the graininess at the bottom of the image, especially for NG.

Bon chance

W Hotel all the way G. Awesome texture and colors. That one should do real well.

edit: You get to send four. Aha. Here the other three in order:

- Melbourne
- Drake Bridge
- Bellagio

Good luck G. Make us proud.

I think your mexican photo with a boat is great, though it is more for Travel & Leisure than for NG

Heh - ever looked at NG ? Every shot they publish is grainy...

Yup - the competition is for National Geographic Traveler magazine, not National Geographic.

My vote goes to the Drake Bridge. I would probably crop a little off the bottom though. I find the reflection at the bottom left a bit distracting. Otherwise, it's a great shot with wonderful colors.

Is that the bridge with all the bats?

That's the medium they PRINTED on (i.e. to the printing press, where they're not going to spend a lot of money on a page), the original slides I am sure is top notch.
