I need to get my original photo from my Canon A95 to my mac desktop without going through iPhoto (in order to have my submission validated). Does anyone know how to do this?

I have always asumed that the picture in your iphoto library (before being edited, or exported) is the original and contains all necessary data.

The .jpg file that iPhoto createa may not have the exif info on it, but the RAW file in the originals folder will.

If you've already imported the pic into iPhoto, just do the following:

1. Select the picture in iPhoto, and go to the photo menu and select "revert to original." This step will undo any changes or edits you've made since importing it from your camera. iPhoto will warn you that this step is undoable so if you've made some pretty edits, make sure you have them saved another way, in another place

2. Drag the pic from iPhoto to your desktop. This will place a copy of the original photo on your desktop. Alternatively, you can use the "export" command under iPhoto's menus, but both ways accomplish the same thing.

It is this photo which you will upload to DPC for verification.

Adding to what Strangeghost said... you can also look in the iPhoto library to find the image manually. If you've made any changes (including cropping or auto-rotation), it will be in a folder called "Originals" for that date.

To answer your original question, just hook up your camera as you normally would and quit iPhoto if it launches. Your A95 CF card will appear on the desktop and you can just drag the files off as you would for any other type of disc.
