Stop copying!
OK this is my first official rant so fasten your seatbelts. Here is my problem, I have been shooting photography for years trying to capture my feelings in images which will last a lot longer then I will. I am hoping that someday people will see my images and see my style in them. Now I joined DPC in July of 05 and I consider myself a new comer. I do a little research when a challenge is announced to see what it is people who vote on this site like, it is completely normal to know your audience and try to bring something they would enjoy into your work. But it still has to be original and your work.
I have seen in the last couple of challenges direct copies of others work. Take a look at these two ribbon winning images:

Now if you can tell me with a straight face that these two images were developed with independent creativity, I have a bridge to sell you. If I were to guess, I might think this is the same person with two different identities on DP Challenge. For example look at these two kids and tell me they are not the same:

Have we been duped? You be the judge. Are Sonifo and Jaxed the same person?
If not why do people completely copy another? If they are well someone should resign from this group. Why would anyone who is trying to really improve their photography feel the need to cheat? That is so low.

| Sonifo and Jaxed are twins. They were separated at birth, but dpc has finally united them. |

The young girls, the style, the pose, the settings, all are different to me. I don't see them being 'copies'.

Well, I for one can verify that they are not the same people. Jaxed is my neighbor and a good friend of mine. And there is such a thing as being inspired by something, no?? People will tend to gravitate to what they do best.
I could list a thousand examples of, as you say copying on this site and many many others... and life in general for that matter. Just take a look at all the splashes, and water droplet shots and wine glasses with colorful backrounds, grungy portraits and I could go on and on and on.
And let me just say that it kind of irks me when threads like this are started. Eden (jaxed) is very new to this site and I feel kind of bad for encouraging her to join now. It makes me sad that people like to steal ohters joy sometimes. She was so proud of this shot for many different reasons and you've just turned into something very unattractive. Shame on you..... For someone who says they are an all around nice guy, this doesn't seem so nice. :-(
Clearly, there were many people that really enjoyed her photo and I'm so glad for that, as I think it deserves the attention it has gotten. Please don't be so quick to stomp out someones fire when they are just starting out. Everyone is entitled to there opinion and I'll just leave it at that. Some people don't enjoy pictures of children, others may not like landscapes and that's ok. But to call someone a cheater when you know nothing about them is just plain rude.
Eden, I hope you stick around and don't let things like this scare you away. You create beautiful images, as your portfolio shows. Please stick around and share your visions with those of us who really enjoy them. :-)

i'm a relative newcomer to this site and i once thought i had the most unique photographic ideas in the world.
my first, one-of-a-kind entry for beverages was this:
then i discovered that dan_pendleton had done this:
oops. well, my second, never-to-be-duplicated entry for personification:
then discover graphicfunk did this less than four months prior:
yikes, what are the odds?! well, pretty good, i guess, with around 76,000 photos entered in contests. there are bound to be some limits to the realm of photographic creativity, and i think we have to respect that the photographers on this site don't intentionally try to duplicate the work of others, especially when considering newer site members...

OK,
I have a confession to make.
Slippy has multiple personalities, one of which manifests itself as a woman in Florida. He has been perpetrating faud for quite a while now and it's time he was exposed.
If you don't believe it, just take a look at these two images!

| All of our perceptions are influenced by our surroundings and what we have seen. I don't think there's too much truly "original", sprung-from-my-brain-without-any-outside-influence, material out there. Even God created Man in his own image. |

If it were a 'copy' it would be the highest form of flattery. This is a site of learning and discovery. Appreciating and experimenting with subjects and views is valid, even when they have been done before. This site does not value creativity, at least, not in challenges but rather commonalities of form and expression. Again, it is a learning site based more on technical skill than exploration and creativity...
and that is ok :-)

| The most obvious similarity to these two is the exaggerated use of neatimage. One great way to make photos look alike! |

Which I think helps to portray the mood of both these photos. I'm not a big fan of NI but in some instances it really works.

| There is something to be learned here........when you over process you lose the quality that makes a photo unique. You make them all the same...easily interpreted as cheating... |

It does not enhance the mood....it steals it away....it distracts from what is wonderful in the photos...... |

Nope, saw it before it was neatimaged and it definitely changed the mood quite a bit. It made it much more "delicate" looking. It looked wonderful without the neatimage, but it definitely had a different feel to it. :-)

Hello Jennifer,
First of all, I questioned and asked I did not state it was a fact. However I did it in a way it would provoke some reaction and clear things up for me. It really pisses me off to see others creative work copied, it becomes a complete lie. I am sure if I were to reproduce one of your images and win a challenge with it you would be mad as hell at me. That is why I brought up the subject.

It doesn’t make it right.
I did magic as a part time professional for 15 years, and though the saying goes “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” I didn’t appreciate it when someone tried to copy the work I had painstakingly created with my sweat and time because they liked seeing me perform it in a show. I feel the same about photography. To take a picture using a technique which is common is not coping someone, to pose the same type model, against the same type wall with a different expression on their face leaves many questions unanswered for me.
I am a nice guy but one who doesn’t play games and states things as I see them, if to you that makes me a bad person then fine, nobody likes everybody. But you have to understand that was only one example of the suspected plagiarism I have seen on this site just since July. If by stating what I think is obvious maybe it will bring it to the forefront in people’s minds and they will be more aware of their ideas and will become more creative. All I ask is for a fair vote on fair images. Did you notice that in the one challenge two different people entered the exact same photo with a different blur? It happened.
Listen Jennifer, I like your photography and most of what I see here, I have prints I sell here, I am not perfect and I try not to be influenced by others works but I understand it can happen without even trying, but to be intellectually honest you have to agree with me that anyone who knowingly does it should be called on it.
That is all I am doing.
Now as far as Eden, I am taking Jennifer’s word for it and not calling you a copy cat. Eden don’t let my Rant (and that’s what this section if for I thought) dissuade you from continuing to post your images. Take what you want and leave the rest.
