IMO, using the same prop in 7 (but I think it's really 8) challenges is not being original. Creative in kewpie posing maybe, but I think it ceased to be artistically creative after the first one or two. I still would like to know why she keeps using the kewpie in so many challenges, and how it meets the criteria she came up with:
A. Technical Quality
B. Visual Content/Composition
C. Subject
D. Creativity/Originality
E. Meaning (how about a little 'soul')

You tell me.....

I *knew* these exchanges reminded me of something...

I was reading transcripts of conversations between humans and the AI bot called 'Eliza'. They go something like this;

parry: I don't get you.

eliza: Do you wish that you did get it?

parry: It's about time you showed some interest in my feelings.

eliza: Oh, I showed some interest in your feelings?

I assessed the photo as I said I would, the rest is irrelevant to that...I will discuss a ribbon photo but no others.....

I must have missed that post.

The last thing I read on here was where you outlined the criteria you were going to use in your critique. You also said you were going to pick the blue ribbon photo to assess;

I can't find your actual critique though. Do you have a link to it? - Or was it on this thread and I missed it?

Yes, I assume she helped me post the two photos. I tried and did not succeed and then presto they were there. I said thanks if by chance she had helped me. I felt it important to place the second one on too. I guess I quoted the two photos....

This thread is about image grain.
You have promised a critique on the winning photo(s).
You have not delivered.
Are you incapable, or simply unwilling, to put an original thought out?

Well here goes....some considerations when ‘looking’ at a picture etc. I will be brief and present a short list of addressable issues regarding this piece...
Would be best to have this as a print. Not always easy from one screen to another...oh well...
Considerations:
Technical Quality
camera setting unknown
processing obscures ‘photographic’ considerations
image density in highlights/shadows diminished
dodging/burning exaggerated

Composition
focal point inconclusive
lighting inconsistent
colour quality not uniform throughout image
directional lines confusing
horizon tilt
foreground/background merge
quality of image concerns
cropping questions

Subject
unclear
imagery questions
appropriate for challenge?

Meaning
confusing event
unclear meaning or significance to title

A different crop would do wonders for this picture. Is it the ‘blue ribbon’ photo? It is what it is but, it could be so much better...as you can see below...

Thanks for posting that critique. To 'critique the critique' for a moment; it is quite difficult to read in it's current format. It is more like a list of bullet points. And it is very brief (but you did say it was going to be brief!)

Just two of your points I'd like to comment on.

- "horizon tilt": I took the shot into PS. Now, it depends on whether you count that dark area on the right as part of the horizon. If that is included (and it does seem to merge with the horizon), then it is perfectly level.

- "unclear meaning or significance to title": The title was 'desolation' - From dictionary.com we have;

"The state of being abandoned or forsaken; loneliness:"
or
"Wretchedness; misery"

For me personally, I thought the image was quite fitting to these definitions of the title.

Sorry, I tried bullets but nooooo it didn't work! Sheesh.

How about this definition, 'a state of complete emptiness or destruction' and/or 'anguish, misery or lonliness'?

I would say imo 'lonliness' is the sugarcoated version...

Of all states 'nothingness' is the worst. Love or hate are far superior to the void. Desolation is a powerful word.

The horizon tilt....the ground is an integral part of the photo so I supposed it would be the horizon. From my view even with the treeline? the horizon falls to the right...

Actually, I have done mine. I commented on each of the 3 ribbon winners before the challenge ended--while the entries were still anonymous. I was not particularly flattering of the image which ended up in first place...but I did offer my "critique" of what did not work for me.

Where have you "done" yours? You've entered 39 challenges and offered a grand total of 36 comments on other people's images...well, actually, some of your comments are on your own images. When did you do "your part"?

For what it's worth, on Joey's pic:

The horizon IS level. The hills are the horizon, the field of stubble is a foreground, although the low camera angle does pull it very close to the horizon. Reinforcing the levelness of the horizon as presented, see the stratification of cloud layers near the horizon and that they are level also.

Suitability of subject for "grain" challenge seems a no-brainer to me. The title is desolation, tjhe scene speaks to an extended period of drought, with barreness and stubble and despair the overriding "images" here. Dark, grain, contrast seem right.

Selective desaturation is very powerful here; the only color is in the stubble and in the man's clothing/skin, linking these elements very strongly, forcing us to consider their relationship to/impact on each other.

Using dodge/burn to bring up the section of stubble further emphasizes the relationship above. This is a a man at war with the elements, and losing.

It's a spare, powerful, very impressive pictorial depiction that wears its title well; "desolation", indeed...

Robt.

Yup; EVERY post you make to an image thread shows as a comment in your "comments made" total.

It goes to your statistics as a comment. So if you "respond" by commenting under your own entry it "counts" as a comment. Some people prefer to edit their photographer notes or send a message to the person who commented rather than add to the comments under their own photo.
