I do microstock, i enjoy it, and it pays for newer, and better equipment.

Those 20cents sure do add up... I started in December and this year I've made about $1600. Microstock is not for everyone, there is some amount of work to it, but I love coming home from a busy day at school turning on the computer and seeing that i made 10 or 20 dollars without doing anything that day. I currently have about 350 images in my library but I am shooting to get to 500 by the end of the year and 1000 by the end of next year. We'll see what happens.

Anyone doing more than a 100 images or so on the microstock sites should seriously consider putting your efforts into a real stock house like Alamy.

There is no hook with Alamy that says you can't sell your images both places at one time. Try it. With 300-500 images out there you might be able to afford a 5D next year.

I'm not gonna debase the microstock sites as I believe they fill an important, charity-like, niche. I just think it makes good sense to sell your images for all they are worth. And personally, I believe that my images are worth a bit more than .20 cents a download... and so are yours.

We'll see just how much upsampling they'll tolerate to list my "must-have" images ... : )

You laugh, but they've acknowledged they got my disc yesterday ...

BTW: USPS Global Priority Mail, small flat-rate envelope, $5.00 USD: Dropped-off Wednesday afternoon in Oakland, CA; received in England on Monday.

Cool!

To be honest, I initially thought that there is no way a 2mp image could stand up to 48mb. Then I tried one of the images from my duaghters 2mp Canon... lo and behold, it handles the upscale quite easily, IMO.

I'm curious to learn how your images fare.

Good Luck!

I notice a couple of macro sites are based in the UK (notably Alamy).

For the admin stuff :-

- Can they pay you in USD and if so how (direct deposit, paypal e.t.c.)?
- For the US based people, do they send you stuff for tax 1099/whatever or is that something that you need to track manually?

Alamy recommends ensuring that "digital camera images are captured on a digital camera capable of producing files of 17MB and upwards".

Is this limited to the 1ds MkII and equivalents?
10/25/2005 12:48:28 PM · #35
It also says "When placing images with Alamy, however, images must be unsharpened (not to be confused with 'soft scans' or 'unsharp scans'). This is so that clients and their printers can decide for themselves how much they wish to sharpen the images."

Huh?

Do you guys really not apply any USM before sending the file?

That's what I did, sent them unsharpened, uncompressed RGB TIFFs (that's why they don't want uploads). After (substantial) upsampling the files averaged about 52MB each -- I put 15 on a DVD-R. Unfortunately (or maybe not), I don't have one of their "recommended" cameras.

I see no point in not following instructions the first time ....

I sharpen all of mine. But I don't OVER sharpen them. Most people over sharpen a tad. Of coarse all of mine have been film scans so far.

For the most part, yes.

I tried not to sharpen mine at all. Unfortunately the Adobe raw converter applies some sharpening by default and I neglected to turn it off, so a few my images were mildly sharpened. But I could barely tell it. My test CD is still in the submissions queue, so we'll see.

BTW, thatcloud, did you get the results of your bloodwork back yet?

I just upsampled an image from my 1D Mark II to 70mb. I was pretty impressed. Maybe I can hold off buying that 1Ds Mark II...

No, I believe they are talking about uncompressed TIFF sizes. Convert your RAW file to a TIFF and it should be about that size.

Oh yeah...yes, I did. I will update that thread because I'm sure everyone's dying to know.

That's what I tell the guy at the hotdog stand downtown when I'm selling hotdogs at cost right next to his booth. The money I make covers half of my costs of supplies, but I just looove selling hotdogs so much that I don't care...I mean, it's just a hobby!

When I bought my A70 I never dreamt I can get my money back but I did it!

ALAMY INFO..

Minimum Pixels- 6MP (but I have got away with a 4MP)

Minimum File- 48Mb TIFF (it can be LZW compressed to save disc space)

Upsizing Software- Genuine Fractuals or CS/CS2 interpolation (that of course if you don't have a Mk 1 )

Sharpening?- They say NO...but a small amount is up to you, don't be dissapointed if they fail at QC.

Images up on microsites - 3 megapixel images
Upsizing Software- Don't have Genuine Fractuals or CS/CS2

'nuff said.

Why if you don't have a Mark I?

Not too sure why you brought a Pentax then, why not stick with a point and shoot 3MP if you wish to continue on the bargain-bin sites?

Mark 1's create 48Mb Tiff's without the need to interpolate the images.....
