It's another groan-I'm-going-to-turn-this-into-a-thread-about-selling-images-for-next-to-nothing kind of groan we've heard in many, many other threads.

Matt: There's a raging debate about the pros and cons of microstock. Lots has been posted in the forums here about the subject; I suggest you do a forum search and decide for yourself. Good luck.

As far as I'm concerned there is no debate...just a big CON...the con is that these sites are making serious money off you while you earn seriously nothing.

Photographers Direct won't take you if you are on a microstock site.

Image Vortex is another one.

How much have you made on your sites?
10/24/2005 05:39:45 PM · #11
I've made a few hundred bucks with stuff that would otherwise be just collecting dust on the hard drive... and I don't see the harm. If you find the sites offensive, then DON'T USE THEM. I don't see why it has to become a big whine-fest every time this subject comes up. Let it be your personal decision.

Your a designer first. I'm sure you do love microstock. I don't really see anybody whining around here about it. I see open discussions and people trying to educate others about the true value of their photography.

Give it about five minutes... I can promise you that's the direction this was headed...

And for the record, I don't use any of these services as a buyer.

Whining is used around here a lot. I see very few people whining. I see some seasoned pros trying to give great advice to people just starting out about the pitfalls of selling images way to cheap. Then I see people arguing (in my disbelief) that their images aren't worth more than a few bucks to them.

You can lead a horse to water...

The amount I have earnt is of no concern, lets just say I am more than happy. I can see that you have well over 10000 downloads but I'd hate to know how much you would have earnt on a site that pays more than 20cents or so... that is my argument...that these site are just catalysts for a worldwide image price reduction in the stock industry, if you just can't see that, pity.

I decided not to pursue microstock because, for me at least, it seems like way too much trouble for too little pay.

If your plans are to put up 100 or so of your favorite images and call it good while you wait for the checks to roll in, thats fine. It doesn't take that much of commitment in time and effort.

But, if you plan to put up a real library of images (1000+) you will be spending days and days of your time getting images prepped, not to mention the time it took to capture them. And there is no way I could sit back and wait for penny checks after expending that kind of effort.

I found after chatting with a few people, that there is no difference in turnaround time submitting to alamy for example and to a micro-stock library

In how much time?
10/24/2005 06:31:09 PM · #20
I think the point is that you can make money either way. For some people, making any money on their art is abhorant. For others it's a way to make a living. Neither view is wrong, they're just different. Personally I'd enjoy knowing I helped some small business folks get images they can use to help market themselves. The money, for me, would just be a bonus.

I shoot a lot of pictures to give away...or spend my own money framing them or putting them into a book to give away. But that's just me. If other's want to sell their pictures for lots of money, thats ok too.

I don't see the benefit in discouraging either kind of photo site. To each his/her own.

You have some very nice looking stock-types of shots in your challenge entries, by the way. It's no wonder you've been successful with it!

Yes she does. She's good enough to step up to the plate and compete with the big boys and girls. And earn decent money on her images.

Speaking from experience of submitting to both Alamy and micro-stocks, I have to say that there's a big difference.

I'm keeping well away from the incredibly boring "micro-stock it teh devil" argument, but I couldn't let that snippet of misinformation pass by.
