| I have been reading books going to photoshop websites and there is not a single place that will tell you how to make a border on anything. HOw do I make a black border for a picture. |

Increase your canvas size.
Make sure the color is set to black.
That's one of several ways.
But my Mum is calling me for my tea, so I have to go now.

| That would be set the Background Color to Black (or whatever border color you want) before increasing the Canvas size. |

| Just do Image / Canvas Size. You can select the colour from that dialog box. |

| I usually create a seperate layer, fill the layer completely with color of choice, usually white, turn on grid, cut a square out of the middle by measuring from the ruler and snap to grid and let the photo show through, then I adjust the photo layer for best fit through the border, and flatten the image. |

what I usually do, especially for challenge entries is select all the photo, then do "EDIT" -> "stroke" then select the colour and how many pixels width. Note, it will draw the border over your photo, not adding it to the edge, doesnt really bother me though. You can overlay them as well by repeating this, if you want a border with a bit more detail. Hope it makes sense

Yep, that's what I normally do, but, when you open the canvas size dialog box, there is a little color swatch/picker there and you can click on that and change the color.

But under the stroke option you can have the border go outside your photo, inside or halfway over both (centre).
So you don't have to have the border go over your photo.
Choosing the inside option won't alter the dimensions of your picture though.

You guys are absolutely great. Thats just the question I have also had, and as a coincidence, Coraanne asked it for me, and you have both answered it perfectly for me.
I've just done it now, and it works perfectly, by either method.

I usally, crop the photo the hold shift+alt and drag the crop so it extends past the photo. What ever color your background is set to is what color your border will be. You can also select the photo and add a stroke before you crop.
