Hi all,

I know I'm going in a dangerous territory, but I think the picture has been flooded with 1, 2 and 3 that doesn't deserve, considering the technical quality, subject and overall sharpness. I think it's also a clear interpretation of pride.

What you think?

Take care,

S.

when the results came up i was so surprised not to see this on the front page... i automatically went to look what place it got... i couldnt believe how deep i had to dig!!! it was definitely one of my faves!

I donno... It finished pretty well. It was a low-scoring challenge altogether. You didn't get many 1 and 2 votes at all, IMO, considering this is a partially naked child on a toilet. I mean, you got to admit that's treading in taboo territory and some people just will not approve of this image. Got more 6's than 5's. Got a 7 from me, incidentally.

You deserve bravery points for even shooting this, let alone posting it up.

Got a 10 from me and into my favs. You should be proud of this image. I know this is a long ways away but this would make for a good photo during her wedding :) LOL!

Without sounding rude and uncaring, I'm sure all of us believe our photos should do better when they don't. Let's just accept what we get and move on! :)

now i see where you're coming from here but I feel that this photo is 100 X more appropriate then the personification yellow ribbon. If DPCers will approve of the "Forbidden Vegetable" I think they would be approving of an innocent picture of a toddler on a toilet...
10/19/2005 03:13:44 AM · #7
Tend to agree, with that cheeky grin and superb execution I expected it to score much higher ...

your not teh only one who got bad votes I had 23 one's . I think you should only get a one if it has nothing to do with the challenge.
o well.

In a healthy world this would be true, but we live in times now where people are seriously trying to forbid ALL photography of children in public places because of the potential for... hell I don't know what they are thinking... But it's a sad fact that this charming, refreshing, innocent image will be seen by many as highly inappropriate, regardless of how we may view the lewd vegetable.

It appears that partially naked children and American flags are controversial subjects on DPC.
10/19/2005 05:01:31 AM · #11
i finished in the top ten (YAY) but got quiet a few 1,2 + 3's due to the fact that it is a nude. I think some people are offended more easily than others and when u submit a picture that might tread on some feet, you have to be ready to be marked down because of this. Anyway i love yr pic, great expression and overall execution

Anyone who finds this photo even remotely bordering on the taboo, or slightly provocative needs to question their moral standards. There is absolutly nothing sexual about this picture, the child is very well dressed and any "naughty parts" (using this term not to offend the sensitive ears of sone users) are very well hidden. Along with the first time you tie your shoe or get your first kite to hang in the air using the potty is an extreemly proud moment in a childs life and this is marked by the fact that they announce it loudly and proudly to anyone who will listen! It's not a picture that I would hang on my wall but there will definitly be several similar ones in my baby's photo album and quite a few mailed to family and friends who want to watch the progress of their beloved little tyke. Cheers on the nice photo...

I think it's just an idea that came up naturally and don't see anything about taboo nor I can think about it as a nude photography. She's my daughter and she's far more important than any picture. If I had thought even for a moment about bad things I'd avoided posting the picture. It's a so innocent picture. Come on.

I have a crazy proposal. Why don't we agree that 1, 2 and 3 are coded voting like:

1. Technically wrong
2. Technically wrong or doesn't fit the challenge
3. Doesn't fit the challenge

and leave 4 to 10 for personal taste?

If this is not true, the vote can then be disqualified.

As I said earlier, maybe it had nothing to do with the 'taboo' issues that have been mentioned here! I would be proud of 29th place, just as I am proud of my 40th place! It's personal taste! Let's just accept it and go for the next challenge! It has just shown me that people who vote think that 39 other images were better than mine. It just means I have to do better next time!

If we did this we would only be changing the scale from 1-10 to 4-10
then people would complain about getting 4's. Did the pic deserve 1's or 2's, IMO no, but also IMO it didn't deserve 9's or 10's either. I mean technically you have a sound shot, subject is a matter of taste. I didn't vote and if I did I probably would have given it a 6 or 7. Overall I say it should have finished in the top 25% and it did, so, I think that it over it is a just finish. Ofcourse this is just my thoughts on that!

Makka, sorry but I don't understand why you're insisting on being proud of the 29th place. It is not a matter of being proud or not. We're just discussing the results, because this is the Challenge Result forum. I'm not complaining on the 29th. I'm just wondering of the 1, 2, 3 just examining the picture, the other pictures and the general feeling.

True? - Who decides if it's 'true' or not?

It can often be subjective if a shot fits the challenge, or even if it's technically okay or not! These things are open to personal interpretation.

I think the last part of this statement may give you an idea of why many may have voted this low...I think perhaps alot of people thought an image like this belongs in a family album and not for the whole world to see? I don't see any technical problems, and I think it did fit the challnge quite nicely...but people will give out 1, 2, and 3's to images they just plain don't like or somehow find offensive, it's as simple as that...like Makka said...we all have different tastes.

5.7 is a solid, cute picture & meets the challenge.

Site Council can be an answer. Or a jury. It's not a way to override the taste.

I think that it's pretty objective to recognize when a picture has a technical mistake like unwanted out-of-focus or shake. I agree with you on the "fits the challenge" part. Another idea can be: if you want to rate less or equal to 3 you MUST comment. I'm crazy I know.

These kinds of "solutions" have been offered before, and the reasons they won't work, too. Site Council is busy enough without having to judge each photo submitted. And there will always be discussion about whether something was intentional or not. Requiring comments on low votes would just get you a bunch of comments with gibberish to satisfy the requirement of making a comment.

Everything is controversial on DPC. It passes the time.

Once again we have confused the line that is in between art and reality. In art this child is not naked, nor semi-naked, nor seating on a toilet, this child is happy and that just brings joy to your eyes and hearts. In reality we should probably call the police on their parents. I wonder, did DPCers forget that they were looking at art for a moment? Or do they not posses the eyes of artists?

Oh and I guess this would be a bad time to meantion the magnificent Sally Mann...

Unfortunatly I did not finish voting for this challenge but your right quality and the fact the child is showing pride with such a big step in her life. It should have scored better, it's pride to me.

Nope - i'd prefer to express my freedom to vote how i see fit, not how you see fit. Cheers.

OP - don't take this the wrong way but some people (not myself) just don't like children and vote them low "on principle" or some such thing. Ditto for cats/dogs/flowers/sunsets.
