Those of you in foreign countries who are worried about PayPal, worry not. We're simply using PayPal to accept credit cards on the site. It is my understanding that you do not have to have a PayPal account to use our payment mechanism. So long as you've got one of their 4 major credit cards, you'll be fine.

Let me try to clarify a little further. We are not simply doing a 'send us $25 at this e-mail address with your paypal account'. When you get to the billing page on the site, you'll see that if you already have a PayPal account, you can use it to send the money. If you don't have a PayPal account, you'll simply enter your credit card information as you would on any other site.

Well, I will never enter any credit card info over the internet.
I will be more than happy to send you a U.S. Postal money order.

We'll be happy to accomodate this, and I'll also add it to the new FAQ.

I've used PayPal for about 3 years now. As an eBay merchant, and a buyer I never encountered any problems. As a bonus, they will give you a $5.00 for opening an account. Back when I started using it, I received a $10 credit for everyone I referred. That was great! And they always came through.
They are now owned by eBay I think, so somethings may have changed. Ebay has been reputable too though.

I never used PayPal myself but I read some bad things about it. There is a website which tries to warn people what could happen: //www.paypalwarning.com/. But I guess the risks will only affect Drew and/or Langdon because they hold the account.
I don't say that PayPal shouldn't be used here. Just wanted to share the info.

I tried to pay for an eBay purchase through PayPal and was required to sign up, which is currently impossible in South Africa. Please tell me I'm wrong because it's proving to be a major inconvenience.

Let's just wait and see how things go on Tuesday. If it's lame, we'll change payment systems... simple as that. :)

Just joined DPC today myself. Found the registration confusing, and don't like that I provided my card number but now have to wait till I get the statement to determine my new PP member ID. Until I can do that, I am not a full member. Surely there is a better way!

DM,
I don't think you need to worry about the member ID to join up with DPC. From what I remember. the member ID is just used by Paypal to credit back the Paypal joining fee to your credit card
(it's used so that you don't enter in someone elses card)

Cheers,
Richard

Hi Richard,
Maybe I missed something (entirely possible!), but I selected the option for joining, not registering. When I entered my credit card information, I was forced into creating a PayPay account. When I then logged into DPC, I was a Registered User, not a member. I did not see any way to NOT create a PP account. One screen told me that I could not use the PP account to purchase the membership until I had retrieved the code. I think Drew needs to look at this further! The registration process DOES force you to open a PP account to join this site. Barry

For those of you who don't want to give their credit card numbers over the internet, to Paypal, or other internet web sites, check with your credit card issuing institution as they may have ways of paying for purchases without giving out your real account numbers. It's perfectly legal and most credit card institutions have these programs to combat identity theft or credit card theft.

Here's how it works...You go to your institution's web site and apply for this (usually free) service that registers you to receive temporary account numbers when you make purchases over the internet. When that's done and you want to pay for something you simply initiate a program that was downloaded to your computer when you registered for the service, and they assign a new credit card number for that transaction that is only good for a certain period of time and for only a specific amount of money (stipulated by you). This way, you can never be overcharged by unscrupulous merchants.

Not that we have to worry about that here, but it gives me peace-of-mind knowing that my real credit card number is not floating around out there for people with bad intentions to get their grubby little hands on. Anyway, each institution is a little bit different with how they handle this, so give your bank a call and see if they a program like this setup.

Hope this helped, and happy picture taking!

For those of you that don't like using your credit card account.
check with your credit card company I.E. mastercard, visa, etc
I think some of those companies have a protection in place for online purchase. Not sure if membership would apply but I would think anything you use your account on online.
By the way, I use my credit card for almost every thing. I get bonus points. I purchase my tele and wide anlge for free with my points.....

PayPal was the best option for us at the time, and unfortunately, we're not really in a position right not to be able to change it. If you'd like to become a member by check, you can e-mail me for the address to send to. We've also worked out situations in the past where we can set you up with 2 weeks of your year's membership before you pay, while you wait. If you're interested, e-mail me.

I've been using PayPal for years to make purchases and have never had a problem with them. What is all the "hoopla" about? I saw the lame link called "paypalsucks.com" in this thread but has it ever occured to anyone that maybe it's Internet BS directed toward a successfull company (PayPal and eBay) by the competition to try to discredit them with no shread of proof of any wrong doing?

What prompted all of this?

I'm with you Chris. I'm from Canada (A FOREIGN COUNTRY, OH GOD...NO!!!) and never had a problem. The people who create those sites (who for some reason don't own either a dictionary or a spell-check) are people who (in general...not EVERYONE) likely deserve whatever they get. I've had some problems buying on the net, but NONE of them are Ebay's fault.

i bought my DPC membership with PayPal, and oddly enough, I'm still here.

Hi Drew,

That's not entirely correct. I have a Mastercard, but because it was issued in South Africa, I can't use it on paypal. I was very disappointed a couple of months ago, when I tried to become a member, but couldn't because of this restriction by Paypal. I've been meaning to send you guys a postal order, but I just haven't had the time. Wonder how many other DPC'ers have been discouraged from becoming members because of this.

Well, I certainly did not mean to start a rant here. Just pointing out to the administrator(s)that the process is somewhat confusing, the delay is a pain, and that you ARE forced to create a PP account to join up. This is certainly no big deal. I have no valid reason not to trust PP - I am sure they are fine.
Thanks for the offer, Drew, but I can wait till I can obtain the PP member number to obtain the full membership.
Mainly, I am just glad to be here, and am really hoping to learn a lot.
Have a great day, and forget I mentioned it :)
