Here's food for thought. In as much as I am happy about my highest rated score, I have to ask the question.
Is there no room for ABSTRACTS on DPC?
We've all seen all the same old things and actually some of my outtakes were flowers and things we so fondly see in every single challenge. So I took a risk of submitting an abstract. I was really hoping to squeeze in the top 10 in this challenge but fell short. I'm happy about my 14th place but the question begs to be asked.
There were a handful of abstracts in this challenge and they were actually very pleasing to see. It's nice to see change every now and then but it seems for now, abstracts will remain a love or hate thing :) |

Almost seems to me the very fact that you placed highly answers the question.. that yes, there is room.

I think you did very well! Look where I ended up with my abstract!
I think you proved the opposite of what I would conclude with mine: that there is a place for abstracts. But perhaps not ones that look like they break the rules? (That's my theory anyway--I asked for validation at the start of the challenge but it took two whole days to get it validated, more than 1/2 the votes (around 145 out of 234) had already been cast before it was validated.
84th place with an
average vote of 5.509
40 votes out of 234 were three and under, despite the clear predominance of complementary colors green and red.

But in a challenge? I think skip's image is great but not so sure how it would do in a challenge. This is perfect for the Complimentary Colors challenge.

I liked this image Neil. I gave it a high score. For one it's different and quite refreshing to see. I knew it was yours at the get go. Just goes to show it's a love or hate thing as I mentioned. |

Yes there is. But not among the ribbons I reckon. Abstracts do not have mass appeal - even great ones like yours.

Not to sound like an ass or anything but when I seen this pic in the challenge, I immediately knew who it belonged to. I don't remember what score I gave it but I do remember thinking to myself, Come on Rikki with all the great photos you take, all you could come up with was a retake on the "S" Curves photo in your portfolio? Not that I don't like the photo, I think I expected a little more creativity from you than a retake. I don't have a problem with abstracts either.

No harm done Dave :) Although it's funny that you mentioned that I used the same subject. What about the rest who use the same subjects? My shot was a retake yes. Partly due to the fact that it was a last minute thing. However, in the whole scheme of things, don't you get tired of seeing the same things over and over?
Looking at gaurawa's image, it's different and too bad he didn;t get the brown :P but isn't it a bit refreshing seeing something else? Neil's image is the same way too. Joezl seems to be on the mark, even though technically it's good (at least i think it is), there seems to be no mass appeal.
So let me go back and start shooting flowers and bugs. they seem to have the "mass appeal" we all strive to get :D

...or you could just shoot portraits that look identical. Just change the background and model. It seems to be popular around here. Hell, you could even draw an outline on the left third of your image viewfinder so you know exactly where to frame the model.

I know alot of people use the same subjects. I'm sure some people go back in the challenges to get ideas and see what kind of shots won.
Sorry if I offended you but I was just kinda dissappointed when I saw it.

No offense taken Dave and that's exactly why I did the shot that I entered. It's different from what you've seen in all challenges. |

Plenty of room on DPC for abstracts just have alook at Jean. I think you are right they are a love/hate form of photography.
I personally love a very good abstract but hate poorly executed ones.
Your shot is miidle of the ground for me striking colours but not much else. |

abstracts are great, but in challenges I think people are confused about how to vote for them because they can't identify with a lot of them. but yours looks good.. congrats on high finish.!

i have to agree that while there is a place for abstracts, it is abstracts like mine and neil's are rarely at the top. i enjoy sharing mine, but tend to shy away from challenges where i personally don't feel my image really nails the challenge.
on the other hand, it would appear this What!? challenge should lend itself nicely to some interesting abstract interpretations... |
