My A70 was affected.
See here!
And here
I contacted Canon China and they said they will refund the expenses (around USD60). I still have to face the bureaucracy of the system...
The camera has the second CCD replacement and it collapsed again. The new CCD-s will be available only in mid December.

Is it only me having this problem?

Canon is doing good by now.
Even if the new CCD-s available only in mid Dec I will get my money back these days for the CCD I've changed.

I thought my daughter's Powershot A60 was toast, but they're sending me a shipping label for the repair. :-)

I'm surprised to see a camera like the Fuji S2 Pro in that list. I would have thought that the sensors put in DSLRs would come in the ceramic housing, rather than the cheaper plastic housing.

Also, I"m surprised to see any Canon cams in that list as well. Do they use Sony chips? I thought Canon had their own fabrication facilities.

i had just finished setting up my shot for the candlelight challenge, when i discovered that my ccd bit the dust. or so i think. i'm taking it back to the shop today (because i'm one of those suckers who purchased an extended warranty, so let the shop deal with it!).

here's my question, though. my lcd display shows solid black, except for my menu items. those show up just fine. at first i thought maybe it was just the display but that the camera could still take pictures. i took a picture, downloaded it on to my computer, and IT was solid black as well. is this really a ccd problem or is this something more? anyone have any feedback?

the death (even if it's temporary) of my camera saddened me greatly. i don't know what i'm going to do while it's gone for repair. perhaps i'll see how reasonable it is to rent a camera from the local shop and take a model out for a test drive...

...and now i just received notification of a holiday catalog speed challenge. oh, cruel fate, why do you mock me so! ;-)

thanks,
jeannel

My sons A60 seems to be having intermittant problems. Anyone want to post the best contact info?

Ok, I dug it up:

It has recently come to our attention that the vendor-supplied CCD image sensor used in this Canon digital camera may cause the following malfunction: When the product is used in recording or playback mode, the LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit either a distorted image or no image at all. While reports of this malfunction have been rare in the United States, we have determined that it may occur if the product is exposed to hot and humid environments.

Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, products exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair.

U.S. residents are kindly directed to contact the Canon Customer Support Center for further assistance at 1-800-828-4040. Support hours are Monday thru Friday - 8:00 AM to 12:00 midnight; and Saturday 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM (all times EST). Alternatively, if electronic support is preferred, please send your email to carecenter@cits.canon.com

This information is for residents of the United States of America and Puerto Rico only. If you do not reside in the USA or Puerto Rico, please contact the Canon Customer Support Center in your region.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by this issue, and appreciate your understanding in this matter. Thank you for your support and patronage of Canon products.

Bad news. The guys here in China are really...
They said it's hard to get my money back. They also said they only changed the control board (???) and the CCD that they have sent me on my request was from another camera. The new CCD-s are to arrive in February. By that time I will leave China and I don't know if I can fix it after.
And again I want my money back. On Monday I plan to contact Canon and identify the this little f...k.
The problem is that I sent my camera to a local lab that sent it to another one in another city. And that one is only an appointed one.
Heck...I'm pi...ed.

I heard of this problem a couple months ago on dcresource.com, and sent my A70 in after receiving a shipping label from Canon. It's actually the second time I've sent it in for the sensor (just before the warranty expired last year). Hopefully, it'll last now...
