There have been some storms rolling through Houston the last few days and I tried 2 nights in a row to get some decent lightning pictures but I failed.

Then last night I was at a friends party when a spectular lightning show came by and there was no rain, so I set the camera up and got these.

Lightning

They are by far the best lightning pics i have gotten so far.... I just wish the lower level clouds were not there...

God job. I'll try to get some this summer. I've never tried it before. I guess a long exposure is the way to go.

Great shots..I have a son living in Spring and when visiting them always have a lightning treat. Where I live that event is very rare.

You've got some nice shots there. Where I live 99% of the time when there is lightning it is raining and/or right over us. I've only been able to shoot it once

thanks all, and Aaron, keep trying, last night I was at a party and had no intention of getting (chasing after) any lightning shots, then the lightning just came from no where and was pretty intense. The sky was very full of lightning and it covered most of the sky. So it was easy pickens. There were only a few big bolts and most of it was ultra fast and small, plus the clouds covered up most of them.

I think both of you have some great shots!
jab119: I like how you included part of the roof line in one to give the viewer the relationship to the proximity of the bolts.. even more of the house would have been okay for that one.
I enjoyed viewing them all!

If only lightning would strike in the same place twice, we could ask it to pose!

Great lightning pix!
I've been waiting all spring for a good lighning storm and we have not had one yet, at least when I'm in town.
Figures, I just got down to Texas (Austin) this evening, and looks like I jjust missed the action!

Jab119:

I see you are using JALBUM. How do you like it? Would you recommend it? Are there any catches that you can think of, because I noticed it was free?

Yes Im using JAlbum, I like it, so far I have not found any "bugs" or problems its pretty configurable plus you can set it up to have it ftp your work to your server, and there are additional "themes" you can download for free as well. But I really havent found one I really like except for the DarkXp one im using. Some give more Exif data but dont have the look i want while others give less exif data and look better.

From what I have read you can tweak the way the style sheets look but I have not had time to do that.

I'd like to recommend smugmug.com. It's 29.99$ a year, but you have unlimited storage, and up to 8MB pictures. The galleries are very nice and organized and it's a breeze to use.

Great lightning shots BTW! :)

Question on lightning pictures... I notice that everyone seems to have an exposure time of 10 or more seconds. My camera can only do 8 seconds at the slowest speed - will that suffice to make adequate lightning shots?

Mark, yes you can get lightning pics with just 8 seconds. Most of my previous lightning shots were mostly hand held with a shutter speed of 1/250 or 1/4 sec or somewhere in between. These were day time shots so faster speeds were needed.

The pics I posted here at the begining of this thread was my very first attempt at longer exposures and it worked out nicely. However I still have some tweaking to do to get the colors a little nicer.

I recommend using a tripod and lots of patience
