Found a D100 for $700 including a 1gb cf card and the vertical grip (no batteries but that's not an issue).

Any immediate thoughts or should I follow my gut and buy this?

Any lens? How's it being sold? This face-to-face or online? etc etc...

Is the camera in working order? Why is the seller selling it?

I gotta run, will leave it to others. D-70 is in most respects a better camera and available at a similar price, assuming there's no lens on the D100. Let the Nikon peeps advise you, and good luck.

Camera works great. Being sold through a very reputable camera shop in Calgary. Owner upgraded, sold a bunch of lenses as well. This price does not include the lense but I'll pickup a used 77mm for $150 or so from the collection they have.

Please keep in mind this is $700 cdn ($580 american)... the D70 is nowhere near that price here.

If it's from a camera shop, then you'll probably not have any problem, assuming they know what they're doing and have tested the camera out to make sure it works correctly. The D100 is a great camera, and I think $700 for it, the grip, and the card is a great price (though, bearing in mind that I have not yet checked the current price for this camera - I paid $2K or so for mine.....).

Brand new a D-100 is $999 at B&H. I'd make sure that it is not worn out before forking over $700. How many shots on it? Like Bear said you can get a brand new D70 for about the same price now.

edit: whoops - I see your talking canadian $. Sorry. I'd still make sure it is not close to rebuild time.

Canadian... that is the key. $700 Canadian. You cannot get a D70 for $700 Canadian.

B&H is talking about $1200 (with shipping) without the battery grip or a CF card...

With regards to the quality, actuations are not known (and the salesman is too busy to dig through the menus) but the customer who sold it is a long time customer of this shop and is quite well known for the quality of his equipment.

Yes - the comment about "rebuild time" is valid. My D100 is about 1.5 years old, and I have taken over 20,000 photos with it. Maybe closer to 25,000. It recently just had the aperture control module replaced in it - thank goodness it was still under warranty.

Canada has paper currency? I thought they worked on the barter system with penguins and beer being the primary currency?

I'm out of penguins and I don't want to give up my beer so I have to resort to the colorful paper.

Mcrael, what's the cost like (non-warranty) for a repair job like that?

I don't think it's nice to be so snotty to them. They switched over to pelts as currency years ago.

not a clue regarding the non-warranty cost, but because it's a crucial part of successful camera operation (what part isn't?) I would estimate around $300

If you got the cash, and you want the camera bad enough, I would say go for the purchase. If it were me, I'd go for it....

I've always been under the impression that the first thing to go is usually the shutter and it's about $300 to replace.

Camera is on hold, I'll officially move in to the world of SLR in a day or two.

Thanks for the help. It didn't seem overly used when I held it in the store (either that or very well taken care of), here's hoping that it'll last a year or two anyway.

Ok - consensus is you don't want it! Send me there number ....

DOh! I've been building up quite an inventory of beer (empties anyway). I was saving up for a 5D! LOL!
