I think I might take this week off. I live in such a small town. I know people will expect something that I can't submit. You know what was on our front page yesturday? A tree, a cotton tree!

Took up most of the page. Now do you think people will say about that? We don't have any thing happening in our town and if I do shot something people will probably say this shouldn't be on the front page.

I agree, I'll be taking the week off as well. I live in suburbia and probably could find something news worthy if I tried. My problem is, I work during the day and it's getting dark fairly early now so I won't have the chance for anything outdoors.

We do have a scanner, but with 2 young ones at home I find it hard to go on a spure of the moment when something happens. It usually takes me 20 minutes to get the girls ready to go and by then what ever happened, would be over.

Hay that's the beauty of the challenge. MOST papers put Human Interest pictures in color on their front pages. Signs of the season are very popular right now. Kids jumping in leaves was on the cover of the Tribune recently. Infact if kids are involved it's almost a sure sale.

Maybe this is the week to create your own news! Ask a friend to rob a bank, and poise yourself for a great shot! The possibilities this week are endless :)

Actually, I'm looking forward to this one. It won't be an easy week, but since I'm a news junkie, I'm looking forward to seeing what people come up with.

Keep in mind that this doesn't have to be a news item. I'd say that the point of the challenge is to capture the impact of a moment or an object the way that a photojournalist would try to. As aelith points out, the subject matter of your photograph can vary greatly. Though I won't (as usual) have time to shoot for the challenge, I'm personally really excited about it -- I think it's a great topic for a challenge.

In no way did I mean this isn't a great challenge. On the contrary, I'd love this challenge. However, I can't get out during the day and it's dark when I get off. The chances of me getting a great pic are slim since I'm new to photography and haven't purchased quality flash yet. There is nothing going on indoors around here, unless I happen to be at a bank when there is a robbery, but then all those questions from the police, "Why did you have your camera in a bank sir?" I'd reply, "Here's my DPChallenge media pass."

Better yet, ask that friend to copy cat the east coast sniper and poise yourself near the victim while getting both victim and sniper in the picture. Just don't get behind the victim and stay off to the side. On second thought, it would be difficult to post your challenge submission from prison, huh?

I hear ya, Sonifo. The home of my local newspaper has a population of 3,000. Very rural area. Since Labor Day all the pictures have been pictures relating to the tornado we had. So I can just go out and take a picture of a building being torn down. Or a couple just standing there (you'll see a nice couple that appeared on the front of the newspaper)

For almost 5 years I lived in a ghost town...literally! We were the only two year-round residents. Our nearest neighbor was 15 miles, and the town was 17 mile. Population just over 300! That's right...three HUNDRED! LOL That was in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains. The big news there was what kind of animal tracks we could find in the snow...lol
This week should be challenging. Even though I now live in a much more populated region. I like challenges though so it should be fun.

I think that is what I am going to have to do, but I am going to work hard in this one. Well I do in all the challenges. hmmmm....oh well I will look forward to my 4.something score.

Photojournalism does not mean you have to capture a crime or a visiting politician or other dramatic moment.
"By definition, photojournalism (traditionally referred to as candid photos) is the photographic documentation of an event without interfering or influencing the outcome of the photographs in any way."
Photojournalism is used to enhance a the written word. This could mean a story about saving cottonwood trees, or a scout meeting at the elementary school or the first snowfall of the year.
Please don't eliminate yourself based on where you live. I think this is a really exciting challenge with the potential to see some great photos!

I'm really looking forard to this challenge. I happen to be lucky this week in that I am involved with a group which will probably stage a protest this week. Hopefully, they do so I will have some easy subjects close at hand.

that is what the definition of photojournalism is, I think, but if someone is interested in having a good score, they will probably need a dramatic picture, because most voters don't seem to read the forums. i echo the sentiment that this will be difficult for me. our area is very small, and the front page of the paper usually has kids (can you hear my comments now) or farmers or something. however, i will grit my teeth and try it.

Yes, we are many who live in small towns or other small places where the most interesting for the week is a cat stucked in a tree, the biggest potatoe or something like that. So folks we must think and come up with something better. Why not try to beat them with really good quality photos? If it can´t be exciting it must be a very, very high quality shot. But I don´t think that´s enough, honestly. So people - WHAT SHALL WE DO?

Yes I do agree that it should be in focus. but if you look at most of my photos, they are in focus and yet I got a low score. Hmmmm....go figure.

I think the problem is that a lot of people will be expecting events. There are tons of news stories and magazine articles about things other than current events. There could be stories about cotton, bats, weather, history, medicine etc.

I think people will have to get creative with their titles, which might save the photo. This challenge will be loaded with titles that read as 'headlines', and I ddon't think there is anything wrong with that...for THIS challenge.
