What screen resolution do you use?

I have my monitor set at 1280 x 1024 32 bit. When voting I come across image that are tiny! So I get the feeling that not everyone has theirs set so high.

Is there a recommended resolution for this site?

1920x1200

It's the native resolution of the laptop. Anything else ends up blocky. On my desktop, I think I'm at 1280x1024.

I set my resolution high enough to see detail when editing. I can go as high as 2028x1536.

I guess my problem is that not everyone sets their resolution that high. As a result my images are 4 1/4" x 7" on a 19" monitor. Some of the images I am trying to vote on are 2" X 2 1/2" on the same monitor.

I sometimes wonder if screen resolution and/or the use of lower quality LCD's is the reason why some people scream "over sharpened" when, on my own monitors, it looks fine to me.

I mean... at a lower resolution, you're going to see the blockiness of a photo much more than you would at a higher resolution. It has made me wonder sometimes if I ought to lower my resolution when posting an image on the internet just so that I can see what the average user may be seeing.

Same with lower quality LCD's ... they tend to look blocky even when the same image at the same resolution on a CRT looks fine.

I am from the old generation I guess. only 1024x768. I have to scroll to see portrait oriented photos unless I do F11

I'd guess this is because some people choose to make their image smaller, rather than increase the jpeg compression factor to squeeze in under the challenge file size requirement

Mine is 1280x1024 32bit, the default setting for DVI input on my Samsung 181T

Why does the site limit the size to 150kb? Even if all 700 images per week were 250kb, then you're only adding 22.4Mb of info to the system, or 1.1Gb per year. Is it more about the bandwidth? I'd happily deal with some ads on the side of my non-paying memeber account to help out. Heck, I couldn't care less if there were ads if I was paying or not. If I could enter and vote on 1024x768 images at 350kb, I'd take it.

It's not primarily bandwidth on the server side, but bandwidth on the USER side. There are still quite a few folks on slower connections, and a larger allowable file size woud be a significant impact on them. There's almost no perceptible difference in image quality when you increase file size but leave the 640x640px size alone. Perceived quality actually increases more (for the vast majority of shots) if you allow a larger pixel dimension but leave the file size at 150k.

My three primary 21"ers are at 1600x1200 - i feel that if i can't see each pixel, i'm not getting my full ration, as it were :) Which is why i avoid pumping them up to 2028x1536 or whatever each goes to. For IRC i keep a tft at 1024x760 though, to make the console fonts nice and readable from a distance.

highest my lcd monitor accepts is 1280x1024, which is what i have it set at, any higher i have to scroll around the screen, my vid card outputs 2048x1536 as its max.1280x1024 is good enough for me though. next step is multiple monitors =D
