... Is what I repeatedly told my friend, when she insisted "Fine, if you give me permission, I'll submit it to a website, and we'll see how everyone else thinks."

A lot of people liked it, but they only gave 'aww cute!!11' comments, so I'm not really convinced. I figured I'd ask a community of photographers what they have to say.

Well, there's obviously a lot of subjectivity here, but I'd give him/her credit for more than just a "snapshot." A very close, interesting, and colorful composition. Cute as a button with more than that too.

Why is there a banana on it's head?

For some odd reason the first thing I thought of when I saw that picture was this one:

THANK YOU JayWalk! You're the first person to ask this out of so many people without prompting. Here's where you get to see why I think it's just a snapshot:

My brother handed me a stuffed bear, stuffed mosue, and banana, said 'Put it on the cat, and take a picture,' so I did. *Shrug* I never thought it was much of a big deal (You can see that the photo was taken May 4th, 2004, I really just let it sit aside with all of my other snapshots.)

Brace yourself, here comes my two cents worth:

Yes it is cute, how can you go wrong with a photo of a kitten?
The other thing I like about it is the way you filled the frame, nice and close.
However, the white balance is off, the whole photo is too cluttered, the floor is messy.
There was no planning or preparation involved, so you are right, it is a "mere" snapshot.
But it still IS cute, and snapshots have a right to live, too.

I agree with you, Beetle. Everybody looks past the cluttered area, the pointless banana, the excessively warm white balance, and worst of all, that wretchedly dirty floor/refridgerator. Even still, my friend tells me that she knows 5 people who want to purchase prints of it.. I know of one person, but I don't understand the fascination with such an arbitrary, and disorganized snapshot.. It makes me wonder if I should throw a border on a bunch of my raw cat pictures and sell them. I have a feeling that plan would backfire, though..

oh wow, if you could sell THAT photo, then you should quickly organize a nice backdrop, some appropriate props, a kitten or three and get clicking!!!
Sounds like you know full well what is wrong with that pic, therefore you'd also know how to make it right.

Good luck to you - invite us onto your yacht when you're rich, ok? *s*

Haha, no, I swear I have no talent, the framing, etc. is all chance. I have a camera for the sake of hobby snapshotting. Aside from that, I've limited-to-no skill in setting up a good picture. I also have no backdrops, no special flashes, no >60 watt light sources, nothing. I did however obtain a strobelight for experimenting, but no, I don't think I'll ever get rich off of my pictures, I think this is a one-of-a-kind lucky shots.

Also, I have no idea how to take a picture without it being plagued with noise.. Perhaps it's my camera, but I think it's me.

Edit:

Oh, yeah, and I don't have any kittens anymore, they're all given away. (My cat had kittens, who also had kittens, and it got out of hand until it was affordable to get them all spayed, and possible to keep them from going outside.) I do, however, have maybe 1 or 2 hundred random snapshots.

Edit²: I also don't like taking pictures of... People....... So that kind of limits the possibilities even more. Not to suggest that it's that much of an inhibitor, but it plays a bit of a part in my latent ambition.

Edit³: I discovered that turning down my ISO on my camera reduces noise.. Only problem is that I CAN'T SEE ANYTHING. >_> Who'd have thought 320 ISO would be so noisy, and 50-80 would be so dark? Oy!
